Considering clinical psychologist as a career

Postby jayfoxpox » Sat Oct 23, 2010 2:37 am

Hello everyone,

I'm exactly sure where to post this or if this is the appropriate forum to make a post like this.
Through out my life I've been a slow learner and when I learn new things I'm easily overwhelmed. I'm always told I'm too quiet and look too serious and have no confidence. I am a introvert if you will. after changing from a couple of careers finding out that my skills or personality just doesn't match , it has left me in depression. I just feel like I'm a kind of person who likes to take a slow and calm approach to everything but all of my previous careers requires fast quick on your toes kind of attitude. I've found that when I try to teach someone or give them advice that is where I am most comfortable and the same goes for the person I am helping. So my real question is " what kind of mindset must one have into becoming a psychologist( or something like that)? ( sorry for the bad sentence structures lol)
will any of you kindly pm me if this is not the appropriate place to post ?

I don't know what they say, but I think these things are important in a therapist.

1. understanding
2. patience
3. vast knowledge in many areas (anxiety disorders, depression, and personality disorders especially)
4. being good at handling crises
5. being able to deal with emotions well
6. "practicing what they preach" (my therapist actually uses DBT skills on a regular basis)
7. knowing more than one type of treatment to suggest
8. good listener
9. someone that isn't afraid of what people think
10. someone that isn't extremely shy/anxious around people since they are around them all day
An extremely anxious and depressed individual with a Borderline personality.

You need to have the ability to not let the profession and all it's theory, that you'll be forced to study, pickle your brains.

I guess my biggest question is, have you read a lot of psychology books already? Is it something that interests you anyway?

What about alternative modalities?

Thank's for the replies everyone

@ Sunny

Thanks for the link however , I did not consider those careers because I am not interested in the business field.

@ Jerril

To be honest I have not taken a post secondary course yet so it might be a tad early to tell if I love it yet. I do,however,am reading a book called "Choke" written by Sian Beilock.

Perhaps I need to read a couple of textbooks for a more accurate judgement whether I truly enjoy it.

After a quick search on alternative modalities, I am under the impression that it is "Eastern " medicine. I have not looked into it much and a bit skeptical myself.
