That's true. The gory films can be more like comedies than anything else. Ever see one called Braindead?; or Hostel? They're so gory that I just had to laugh.

hahaha!!! Nice try! Seen it. Sci-fi doesn't scare me. It WAS a good movie, though, I have to say! Got any more?

I'm guessing that you're well informed about horror films in general, and you probably know all of the techniques that are used to scare people. When you get to that point, you shoul be able to more or less predict what will happen in films. Anyay, other than Event Horizon, I cannot think of anything that has scared me as an adult. As a child, Jaws, Nightmare on Elm Street, and Hallowe'en scared the bejasus out of me. I remember that after watching Jaws, I used to be scared to put my feet on the ground while sitting on the couch (in case the shark got me).

You're right! It takes a lot to surprise me. And I'm always so happy when a movie does actually surprise me. But as a kid, Carrie was the one that traumatized me. It was the ending, when the hand comes up from the grave. And I had seen another movie when I was quite a bit younger where a woman had been buried alive and she came out of the grave. That scared me to death!!! Like you, I was afraid to put my feet on the floor because I thought a hand would come and grab me!

Horror movies really don't scare me, one movie that did scare me was a kids movie it had woopie goldburg and three kids and this one part four legs are on the ground thats all you see the camera dosent capture the rest of the creepy 30foot tall unicorn and this deep voice says "don't be afraid" and later on this world is full of children keeping rythm it's unbelieveably freaky!

The scariest movie I've seen is the newer version of "House on Haunted Hill". I saw it in my 11th grade English class.

Turns out I don't react well to scary movies...

I love good horrormovies.
To bad that for every 100th movie there are 99 bad ones.
Nothing scared me anymore, i know all the bad tricks.
And like someone above said, blood and gore are NOT scary.

These movies however, scared the $#%^ out of me ;)

The Changeling 1980
The Woman in Black 1989
Misery 1991
Nattevakten 1994 (Night watch, Danish)
El orfanato 2007 (The orphange)

They are all masterpieces.
If you havnt seen some of the above, check em out, you will not be dissapointed ;)

MaxVonSydow...The Exorcist is conspicuously absent from your list considering it contained wonderful acting from your namesake (of course, in my opinion). What did you think of the film?
I remember when it came out, I was 8 yrs old. I recall the hype and the stories of people fainting in, vomiting on and fleeing the theatres. I finally saw it on tv a few yrs later and it scared the eff out of me. Though it no longer scares me it remains one of my favorites due to it's quality of story and the acting was superb. I was surprised to read yrs later how young MVS was when he played father merrin. He's only as old now as he looked in the film.

Exorcist didn't scare me - it just kind of grossed me out. Alien scared me. I didn't know that thing was going to jump on that guy's face. Or come out of his stomach.

Try Session 9.

I've been watching horror since I was about 5 as well. I dislike the mainstream rubbish-"horror", like the new Exorcist and all that. Most of new horror is just the same formula over and over again. I think those can only scare you if you either really want to be scared by them, or if they just startle you. And that Hostel may just be the worst film I have seen, and I've seen quite a lot, it was terrible even for Eli Roth-standards. The original Exorcist I think is scary mostly for the controversial subject, but I guess it gets to you more when you're a religious person whose values could be questioned or offended by it. It's not a bad movie, but unlike many, I don't think it's the scariest ever made. The Shining is fantastic, although the scariest film for me has to be The Blair Witch Project. I know everyone has either seen it or heard of it by now and there are dozens of similar films out there today, but back when it came out it got to be bad. Anyway, Session 9: It's a smaller production, you may need to get used to the camera cause it doesn't use all that green-blue-filter stuff most of the new ones do (e.g. The Ring etc.)

I agree that The Exorcist is abyssmal, as is The Hostel. However, you can't be serious about The Blair Witch Project, can you? I thought that it was 'horrific' - i.e. an atrocious film. The Ring wasn't too bad, but it was a bit silly too, in fairness.

I didn't find Ring that scary. Things coming out of TVs was a bit scary back in the 80s with Poltergeist. A recent scary film was The Descent. Jaws scared LOTS of people away from beaches back in the day. Zombies can be scary. Night of the Living Dead was quite the shocker in its day. 28 Days Later brought the zombie movie back to....uh... life? Living zombies are faster and more deadly than the dead ones.

If you want to go by scariest scenes in movies you can consider the opening scene of When a Stranger Calls. The calls are coming from inside the house!
