Hi,

I see that no-one has replied here yet, so I thought that I might. I have never heard of him (Влади́мир Никола́евич Мегре́), but I see that he's from one of my favourite cities: Novosibirsk! We don't generally hear much about Russian writers, do we? I cannot think of many, except for Alexander Pushkin, Tolstoy, and - *ahem* - Mr. Putin! Didn't he release a book about Judo? (or was it a video..?)

Russian authors in USA? ... ...

I'm joking... ...or am I? Remember when France would'nt go to war in Iraq with the USA?; and how some shops in the USA then took French wine off the shelves? Maybe I'm not so 'joking' about this Russian author thing after all! I can't really envisage much American authored books in Iran or South Korea either though. Red, Amazon.com (the American version of Amazon) should sell them.

Oh my, I had to laugh long and hard at the irony of Russian authors on PsychForums...sometimes I could swear that half of them reincarnated and ended up here.

Let me rephrase that: I'm not knocking Russian literature. Actually, I've been hard pressed to find a language that so readily lends itself to the expression of creative thought. I am not familiar with this specific author, but I find that, even in the case of non-fiction manuscripts, Russian publications tend to be much richer and more colorful than their American or British counterparts. I'd be interested in looking up both versions for comparison, so thank you for the tip. :)

However, I will throw out this word of warning, especially since the topic happens to be on PsychForums: be very careful when you're exploring Russian lit. Much of it, however beautiful, is forged from agony--and as we all know, misery is contagious. One weekend, I decided to catch up on the short stories of Chekhov. I damn near drank myself to death near the end of Volume II. Yeah, that was one hellish hangover...

I can, however, recommend Dostoyevsky's Diary of a Madman. It's a pretty short read, and relatively fun--if you like that kind of dark, sadistic pseudo-comedy a la Stanley Kubrik.

Oh, and imho, Putin is a douche with a capital BAG. But a crafty one! Have you guys seen his music video? How's this for shameless self-promotion...?

*sigh* Vladimir Vysotsky is rolling in his grave...

Putin? - I find him funn more than anything else. He's short in stature (like Nicolas SArkozy), and he does his best to make up for that. You have to realise that >50% of Russians voted for him for two consecutive terms. We hear a lot about those who are anti-Putin, but you must realise that G Bush Jnr. was elected wth less than 50% of votes the last time around. The people in Russia, Iran, China, etc who our respectives medias laugh at and support are just mirrored people of those in our own countries who hold rallies against our governments. In our countries, we regard them as idiots; in foreign nations, they are heroes, fighting against 'dictatored regimes'. Think about that

What was so bad about Chekhov's work?

I agree--it's all a matter of perspective. But me being the jerk-ess that I am, I have a load of sarcasm for a lot of the world's leaders. Don't get me started on our nation's history. ;)

Chekhov is an excellent writer, as are many other Russian authors. My problem with him is that he's TOO good. His descriptions of the lives of ordinary Russian folks are pretty graphic (in the emotional sense). I remember one story where a woman took her son to the doctor three villages away, and the kid had to have his arm lopped off. What started as a splinter ended up a horrible infection. Then there's the story of the circus orphan whose act was to climb a pole without a net...the description of the screaming little girl in the audience as the boy's bones crunched on the floor of the arena is rather heart-wrenching. Not in a stereotypically "emo" way--but in a "you're there and you're watching it" way.

So...um...yeah. Choose your authors carefully, lol.

Yes, he probably got 'gengrene' in his arm. this is caused by Clostridium perfringens (a bacterium). It does not grow in the presence of oxygen, but it's spores are 'everywhere' around outside. If one of these spores gets into a deep cut where there is no oxygen, then it can grow and cause gangrene. So, make sure that your deep cuts are properly treated. You must realise that once the nerves in the arm are cut, the person loses a lot of their feeling anyway. That's why they cut in a circle around the limb first before removing it (to cut the main nerves and blood vessels). As the person's body then becomes 'flushed' with adrenaline from their own adrenal glands, the sensation of pain is reduced even more so. I read that the best doctors in the old days would be placed on ships, because these were the ones who could cut off battered limbs of sailors in under a minute!

Yikes...pretty gruesome. But at the same time, pretty amazing in the execution of the art/science of medicine.

Sheesh, when I had to have an abscess drained on my breast, it took them 20 freakin' minutes! And THEN they packed the wound! What I wouldn't have given then for a ship surgeon, especially since abscess fluid almost completely negates a local anesthetic...

Stupid tongue depressor I was clenching in my teeth left a splinter....*grumble*

I just noticed your signature - that's very nice of you to write that. If we all took that advice, then I strongly believe that the suicide rate would decrease to an infinitismal figure.
