i would LOVE to actually know the answer to that lol. if there are all these big bangs and crunches, then what started them all, i know its just one of those big questions that you can never answer, maybe the biggest. but it would be really cool to know that. not even the particle accelerators at cern could even start to give any idea of how to answer that.

if i was religious (i actually gave it a go once) i would say god started it and the purpose of everything is to allow us the freedom to make good and bad decisions in life, and to help separate us out so the good can go to heaven, or any other religions equal thing to heaven and the rest can go to whatever the bad place is for that religion. the purpose of us would be to serve god, tho i cant see why something as powerful as god would need to even pay us any attention at all, unless he/she or whatever was lonely.

i actually think tho that, because we cant possibly answer that question, everything just is, and apart from why everything exists, everything is either a cause or an effect. even life is a random co-incidence that at the same time as being inevitable in the universe considering how huge it is, is also very unlikely.

sorry lol, i find this kind of thing extremely interesting

hey, is it a myth or is it true that jedi is actually counted as a religion because of the last census. i dont want to believe it cos it sounds like rubbish, but i was just wondering cos i never seen a definate answer either way.

There is no purpose at all, DarkComrade. We are just born, we die, and then our energy is distributed elsewhere. Think of 'life' as an accident - i.e. it wasn't planned. Therefore, there was never a purpose in the first place.

What's this about the Jedi, cheesychips? You are referring to the Star Wars thing, right? I don't know what you'd call them exactly, but certainly not a religion. It's just like a family-lineage that has super-powers... ... :?

no, its probably a joke but somewhere i picked up that in the last census a load of people put there religion as jedi so now they have to count it as an official religion. its almost definatly wrong but i just wondered if anyone else heard of that

You know what, I think that I have actually heard about this. It's probably just some Star Wars fanatics who started I though. You know the type that I'm on about? The equivalent of such fanatics would be the guys who went out and bought long laether coats like Neo in the Matrix, when those films were popular.

I even saw a chap wearing a Star Trek top once... ...

I say life is planned. It makes scientific sense to say yeh it was just an accident, but it makes real sense to say it wasn't. How the hell did people become these major systems of organs and cells and each cell has it's own system and we live in systems called cities and countries and then there's nature - that's a well planned (or unplanned) system too. It rains, waters plants which things eat, then the energy is passed to others who eat them. The sun gives the plants energy. Weather is controlled by oceans and land and temperature changes which happen due to things on the earth including life and the earth is spinning around with a magnetic field and it's being held in place by the sun. Then ya got all the microscopic things. atoms, molecules, microorganisms! Things live, things die so new things can live. Everything! Everything in existance is a part of some kind of system - some kind of working system that suports other systems around it. And yet we say this is UNplanned?

No offense to that viewpoint, but I just plain don't agree with it! If ya really look at all things and appreciate them for who and what they are, you can't just blow it off and say it means nothing! We may not know the true meaning of everything, but it has meaning!! Why would such beautiful things exist without meaning? I'd be depressed if I thought like that! I'm the type who sees extreme power in every little piece of nature. To be honest, I think if more people felt this way, they'd be happier with their lives. To think you are nothing is a terrible thought! I'd hate to think I was nothing! I'd surely be sulking in my room all day and night craving for meaning of life.

oh you have no idea how long i could go on about this lol and how many theories and facts i know about this kind of thing. ill keep it short tho.

the universe is made up of particles and subatomic particles... and when they clump together, they make everything that we see around us. all over the universe all these combinations have created so many conditions it seriously messes with your head to think of how many. here on earth the conditions a long time ago were just right for alot of chemicle reactions to take place. especially ones using amino acids, that make up dna and rna. anyway after a while a coincidence occured that created the first life form. im not even sure if you would call it a cell. but anyway it multiplied and evolved using mitosis. im missing out alot of detail here but after a while some adaptations allowed for things like biofilms to exist. after another very long time they evolved into the creatures and plants and things you see today multiplying via meiosis. so i guess you could look at large life forms like a huge very close knit colony working together as one big system that is a plant or animal or fungus... and all those forms of life all contribute to form the biosphere (earth). everything that seems planned wasnt because as everything developed it had to adapt to everything else, e.g. predator catches prey, faster prey get away more often, make more babies, species slowly evolves to be faster. predator has to do the same or it wont get food or it can catch other prey.

the planet being just right was a coincidence, actually not even that, it was pretty much inevitable that out of all the planets in existance at least 1 would have the conditions of earth.

everything that seems complicated isnt because its the only way that it could work, high pressure must produce heat, certain parts of the electromagnetic spectrum would be light, radiation, microwaves etc.

so it wasnt planned, it just slowly grew and developed into the complicated thing it all is today.

i really enjoyed writing that lol, can you tell? science is mint!!! :D
ive just done a load of science coursework so im in science mode lol

Trust me, I would really love to add to this discussion, as this is something that I commonly discuss on other boards.

Maybe I'll come back to this and do a proper write-up, but I'm just too ###$ depressed to do anything right now.

If you studied cellular biology, then you would understand how life really is an accident. If you studied biochemistry too, then you would understand it even more. All of the mechanisms in your body right now can be explained by simple laws of molecular biology and chemistry. If you examine life too much, however, you will realise that we have no choices in anything we do. Every decision we make was always going to be one way only, despite the feeling of having a choice.
