im probably being a little dumb cos ive been too busy with college projects and sorting out a job to read about this or post here, but either i dont fully understand or they are covering something up.

if they had a quench problem, that will cause restistance, then doesnt that mean that the magnets will heat up anyway because of the resistance causing more heat and then more resistance... i know thay turned it off but the magnets should be pretty hot already. so when the spokesperson says they need to heat it up, fix it and cool it down for 2 months that just sounds a little stupid to me. cos the magnets will be hot already and it cant take that long to do all that.

anyway i know im just being really dumb here lol (and a little lazy for not being bothered to work this out myself) but could someone explain this to me.

this kinda gets on my nerves cos its gonna take even longer to find out what thay find out from this now lol. im hoping they will discover something that will advance us a little aswell so i can actually notice a difference. that would be really cool, even if its not really very likely.

I think I can explain this: The magnets did heat up by around 100 degrees during this 'quenching' problem. However, the starting temperature of the magnets was around the -260 degrees Celcius mark and, as such, even a rise of 100 degrees is still too cold a temperature for engineers to get to the magnets and repair them. That's why they have to raise the temperature of them (the magnets) even further.

True, I suppose. With big projects like this, it'd be hard to get everything perfect (giving the natural flaws of the human brain). There are probably other little problems that will be unearthed at a later date too. A good example of this is the space-shuttle: When the Space-Shuttle Columbia blew-up on re-entry to Earth's atmosphere in 2003, it was determined that a small hole in the carbon-carbon composite tiles on the underside of the shuttle was to blame (I won't bother going into what created the hole). However, this meant that, for two full decades, the space shuttles had been flying with a design flaw... ...

... ...in fact, they still are flying with it, but they check the wings each time after launch now for any cracks / holes.

yeah i remember that, i was quite young tho then lol, before i knew about any aspergers or any other problem i might have.

it was quite a shock at the time lol, i dont see why they dont just make a few adjustments to the shuttle so its a little more safe. they should have another look at it because if there are still faults with it then they probably wont know all of them and it could happen again.

Hmmm, they can't make any 'little' changes to make it safer though - The fact would always remain than flying upwards with tonnes of rocket-fuel strapped to your ship is a very dangerous thing to do. A completely new system is needed, and that new system is known as 'Orion'. The shuttle is an amazing thing, all the same, but it was proving too costly also: I think that it costs a few billion dollars to get one into space each go.
