I'm well-aware that the Bible is 'flawed', but I think it's closer to the truth that what you're presenting to us. My thoughts are that there was, in fact, a man called Jesus a couple of thousand years ago; and that he did have these 12 apostles who were loyal to him. However, he was nothing more than a revolutionist who spoke-out against the rulers of the time. He and his apostles travelled around doing nice deeds for people to get them on his side and, I'm sure, it was his apostles who exaggerated the stories in the bible to make their cause seem more meaningful.
Science wasn't as common knowledge back then as it is now and, therefore, people would have been more likely to believe such far-fetched stories that they were being told.
