IRC channel?

Postby Musouka » Mon Jul 28, 2008 5:16 am

I was wondering, is there an official psychforums IRC channel? For those that don't know what IRC is, it stands for "Internet Relay Chat" and is one of the oldest chat programs around. It's a very basic program/service, but is still very popular.

I feel an IRC channel would really help out people if they want some very quick respones as the chat could be in real time. This might help some people who just need some answers that instant and can't wait for a forum post.

NOTE: I had no idea where to put something like this, I figured this was the best place and yes, I did do a search beforehand.

Hey,

There is no dedicated IRC channel but I agree that it would be a good idea. I will raise this issue with the site owner. To be honest, I didn't know that IRC was still popular! I thought that things such as MSN Messenger and Yahoo Chat had taken-over. The last time I used IRC was about a decade ago!

Which client program do you use?

Kevin.

I've used mIRC before. It's still very popular throughout many internet communities. I think its bigger in foreign countries than U.S. from what I've experienced though. I've just used it for gaming communities.

Hi,

I got a response from the owner already. He says that we may get a dedicated IRC channel once the website is upgraded. However, it would be hosted from this website itself, probably through a JAVA applet.

I'm really not the best to explain it but I'll try. Without getting too technical... its a widespread chat program with different rooms. A channel is just basically another name for a room. The only difference in IRC is that once you download a main client you can type in the name of any channel and join it. But what Kevin was talking about is that there would be a seperate applet for the IRC on this website. Meaning that it would work the same as any other chat room. (If I'm correct) I've used this system before but when I did it the chat accessible by website was also accessible through the main IRC client program. This might be what he is talking about but I'm not really sure.

Like I said I'm not completely sure about it since I haven't used it that much. But thats how I interpret it. For all practical purposes think of it as a chat room.

That's pretty much it - yeh. When we say 'channel', we are just referring to a chat-room, basically. It would be 'dedicated' because it would be permanently on, and running off the same server-machine that this website is run off.

The JAVA applet would just be a fancy GUI (Graphical User Interface) that you could use to access the dedicated channel. Other programs that can also access IRC chat-rooms include the stand-alone program, mIRC, and (in days gone by) Microsoft Chat.
