They are pretty well known. You got to have heard expressions relating to the four temperaments, like "that person is choleric!" or "that person is melancholic!". The term sanguine is also common, and phlegmatic is more rare but sometimes used as an euphemism for "lazy".

You can see the 4 basic tempers represented with different terms too. Like the also common "Rational, Idealist, Guardian, Artisan".

Where I live in Quebec there was even an humorist group called "Le groupe sanguin" ("the blood type"), since "sanguine" and "blood" when used as qualifiers both give "sanguin" in French (making the play on word meaning both "the blood type" and "the sanguine group", since most humorists are sanguine types). Where I live most humorists are sanguine types, otherwise they are phlegmatic types. Personally I prefer phlegmatic type humor to sanguine type humor.
