What you think of this mental health-related practice name?

Postby Dave Stewart » Sat Apr 05, 2008 6:46 pm

Hello there,

I'm a designer and I'm producing a web site for a friend of mine and her fiancé who will shortly be starting their new business in counselling and treatment for people with various mental health issues.

They've picked a company name that I'm not sure about. As someone with experience in branding and identity, I'm worried about possible negative connotations, but I wanted to run it by some real people (this means you!) to get some feedback.

The name of their new practice is: Calm Farm Therapies

So...

Just take a moment to think about that...

And I'll say nothing...

Until...

Now.

For me, I almost immediately thought of "funny farm" (as in, they send you off to the...), then "mad cow" (the disease that affected cattle in the UK over the past decade).

Now, minds are made to make connections, so there might never be a *perfect* name, but I just think this one may be starting at a disadvantage considering the nature of the business - unless, of course, you see the funny side, but that's not an issue I want to raise here!

Anyway - I may be unique in thinking these thoughts, and that's why I'm here. To find out.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading,
Dave Stewart

Hi there,

Interesting thread - I don't think we've ever had anything like this here before. The name 'Calm Farm Therapies' isn't ideal, but it's not disastrous. I think many people will wonder why on Earth the word 'farm' is used though. Is it located on an old farm or something? If so, then I guess it is okay. If not, then I see no reason why the word 'farm' is being used.

Then again, if people are depressed, suicidal, or otherwise, I don't think they'll give a damn what the name of something is. In fact, the unusual name might breed some interest and actually get them to choose this one over another.

Kevin.

Hi Chucky,
Yes... I agree it's not your usual forum question! Thanks for replying, anyway. Hopefully I'll get a few more thoughts from people tomorrow.
Cheers!

Hi Dave,

I think the name is pretty ridiculous, and quite bizarre. Are they going to farm mentally ill people there into calm animals?

I don't want to be offensive, but I did want to stress how much I disagree with the name.

Hey, I just thought of a name the retains the idea but is more "normal" - Calm Abode Therapies.

I saw an add for a website on this page not too long ago for a mental health wesite called 'label me sane'. I laughed so hard I nearly choked.

Thanks for your responses everyone. I've raised the issue with my friend, and they're they're set on the name they've already decided upon.

I'm not attached to the outcome anyway, I just wanted some market-feedback.

Cheers!

Dave, I honestly don't think it will affect them badly at all. Like I said, I don't think people will be overly concerned about the name of a place - all they'll want is good treatment.

Take care & wish them well from me,
Kevin.
