Thank God there's no such thing as eternal life!

Forget about mental illness for a while and just let loose in here.

There is a book titled Journey of souls that could be either fiction or could explain part of the dilemma, it's new age I think.

No, there's no proofs, but if there was something before life, surely we'd know, since it happened to us.

There's no point being afraid of death, because after all, we used to be dead, didn't we.

I definitely don't think there's point in being afraid. Even when I thought I found evidence for there being something there (like god) I later concluded it could be explained rationally (e.g. mental breakdown), I really don't know but for the sake of those who've suffered, lost their lives too soon etc. I think it would be better if there was a life after death.

But what kind of "life"? Obviously not a corporeal one. If it were, earth would have been completely overrun with people ages ago. So this "life" would have to be an immaterial one. Some people would say, a spiritual one.

Well, so we become spirits, (whatever that means), after our bodies die, and as spirits we continue to "live". But where? Spirits apparently don't take up any space, so we wouldn't need a "place" to exist. So where do we "go"? Some people have said we become thoughts in god's mind. But living usually entails a certain self-awareness. In fact, self-awareness is a basic prerequisite for the definition of "being alive". If we become just a thought in something else's mind, we're not aware of it; they are.

So what does that leave? Ghosts? Spooks, floating about in space, moaning and frightening people? Not much of a life, that would be!

Well, not even counting the religion I was brought up in, I'd like to live forever, and get resentful at the idea of a Heat Death for the universe. I want to see what happens next, and don't like the idea of not getting to.

Says the person with OCD who, when having a good anxiety episode, gets suicide ideation free with his breakfast cereal.... but still, it is what it is.

If there is such a thing as eternal existence for people, the heat death of the universe won't bother you, because you'll still be there. If/when the universe "dies", the space that it used to occupy will remain. That's one of the things I often ponder. Even if you travelled to the farthest point in the universe, where not even a single atom floated, there would still be a place where an atom could go. And even if, by some outlandish (see what I did there?) miracle that space somehow ceased to exist, there would still be a "bookmark" where it used to be. Otherwise, there really would be nothing.....

Haha, I can empathise there, because I get exactly the same thoughts.
