If there's no eternal life, what is there?

Temporary life.

Why would anyone want to live forever, when we've all seen how miserable and wretched even temporary life can be?

I recall reading once about a lucid dreaming experience of a person that made me think there could be something after death or at least something more than this reality. I don't have a personal experience of death or lucid dreaming yet.

"I don't have a personal experience of death or lucid dreaming yet."

Neither have I. As a friend of mine pointed out to me one time, There was nothing before life, so why would you think there's going to be something after it? For eternity, you didn't exist. Now, you do. What makes you think you're going to somehow continue to exist for eternity?

Yes, he was a bit of a downer to be around...

But when I thought about it, and about all the misery that comes into life, (into every life), I decided that temporary life as opposed to eternal life was a pretty good deal. The idea of living forever is the most horrifying and terrifying idea imaginable to me.

People commit suicide because they think they can't endure life any longer. The mistake they make is in assuming that their miserable life is going to keep on being bad indefinitely. But it isn't, and they should be grateful for that... and go and do something they enjoy.

In my country, there is a city where the citizens lost most of their family members in the brutal attack during the war and they still linger on. We'll die anyways and we're here for a reason I guess so why the rush of dying. As for there not being anything before or after life, I don't think there are proofs. There is a book titled Journey of souls that could be either fiction or could explain part of the dilemma, it's new age I think.

No, there's no proofs, but if there was something before life, surely we'd know, since it happened to us.

There's no point being afraid of death, because after all, we used to be dead, didn't we.

Also thankful it tends to go by pretty fast, imagine it being 1,000 years. Still not eternal, but exponentially worse.
