I've thought about it, and it comes down to two main fctors. Art and skill.
Because of graphical limitations, previous consoles were better off stylising games artisitically than trying for realism. It served them well, and many visually pleasing games were produced. As technology increased, and realistic games became possible, the games industry understandably lost track. What was quickly learned is that realistic games are boring. People don't want to 'play' reality. Thus the better games in more recent years include strong efforts to design and stylise their games in tandem with enhanced graphics. The idea is to create a thing of beauty, not to replicte reality. The same goes for films. Once film became advanced enough to enable 'natural' footage, it was quickly learned that this is not what people want.
As for skill, there was something special in learning how to play a video game. Much like learning to ride a bike, there was an exhiliarating sense of wonder and accomplishment as you developed the skill required to actually play these games. Due to there being no major shift or innovation in gaming method since even the NES, this feeling has been absent from console gaming for quite some time (except of course for those new to the hobby). However, there is one brand new exception, hopefully a beacon for the industry. The nintendo wii. Through sufficiently innovating the gaming method they have recaptured the wonder of learning to play video games, something that must be done with the wii-mote. I found genuine enthusiasm in being a beginner all over again. I play my playsttion to appreciate the games as works of art (which they are), but I play my wii to apreciate the act of playing a game (in addition to the gmes themselves).
It is these two things that have been missing for little while in games, and this is why (in my opinion) they games lacked that 'certain something' that we remember from the earlier years. The good news is that it is well on the way to coming back into full swing. Plenty of newer game titles have woderfully stylised and artistic themes, and with the release of the wii we can see an epoch of a new ethod of gaming. Innovation and style is bck, and I am oh-so-happy about it.
