...about that bright light that people see; That's just them dreaming or perhaps their optic nerves tingling/reawakening after the traumatic event these people [usually] had.

No animal is going to get me. I'm being cremated and then thrown to the sea.

Dan (Edmond),
Yes, the 10% brain thing is an urban myth.

I've never been big on religion (raised Catholic- 0% conviction and 100% guilt) so I'm pretty open to theories. I've always believed that humans are powerful beings and that there is another stage of life after death. Whether it's heaven or hell, I cannot say since I don't support the notions of eternal reward or damnnation. We've all done terrible things and we've all done good things, have had pure thoughts and impure thoughts in life so technically we'd all go to purgatory. I just hope I manitain my sanity and rationale should a person I'm particularly close to dies (ie. best friend, mother, grandmother, spouse- should I get EVER get married) and I suffer a mental breakdown. I don't want to revert to blaming myself and God (should this being exist) and seek comfort in religion when death can't be evaded in the longrun. I feel betrayed by people who end up like that, I don't want to betray myself.

Hey Ruby,

What makes you believe that we are "powerful beings"? I am the complete opposite for I believe that we are no more powerful / special than viruses, bacteria, insects, apes, rocks, water, air, etc..

With that in mind, I have an increased appreciation for other forms of life. The spider that I see crawling on my shower curtain has just as much right to exist as I do; so I leave it be.

Or as little. Upon which foundation does one base a 'right to exist'? Would the spider afford you similar treatment if it were in your situation?

If the spider could, it would kill me without hesitating; and I have no problem with that thought.

The 'right to exist' that I speak of should not be given much thought. We are simply matter interecting with other matter. Everything is quite the same when you break it down to simple particles.

Exactly, so why should you hesitate to kill the spider in lieu of it's 'right to life'? It would do the same to you, there is no valid 'right to anything', and ultimately we are just a collection of atoms interacting in an unusual way.

That's true. However, my brain is a collection of atoms that are arranged in such a way as to make me procrastinate whenever I see a spider. Once energy (brain-impulses) have been transferred around a bit through my atoms (my brain) my body then reacts.

To be honest, it's usually 50/50 whether I squish it or not. Since my last reply here, I have killed at least 2 spiders. One had legs that appeared to be at least 5 cm long.

I hold much greater respect for woodlice because I love them. I pick them up and carry them outside. They are not insects, contrary to popular belief. They are directly related to crabs and lobsters and have 14 legs. Indeed, they are the only terrestrial crustacean.

In a way, you can prove that reincarnation exists on some level...
After we die, the molecules (groups of atoms) that made us up decompose through several means like worms and chemical reactions etc. So, some atoms become dirt after being eaten by worms, and plants get some nutrition from soil, so atoms that once composed you are now being used to maintain the plant's cells in the form of new molecules...
Until it's eaten by an animal, and then, in the same way, atoms that were once yours become part of the animal, and so on and so forth until technically...

if you eat anything, you're probably eating matter made up by molecules made up of atoms that were once part of something dead...

not sure if this is reincarnation, but its the closest thing I know of...
it kind of creeps me out to know that parts of me were dead at some point
