Clap of thunder! Battering roar the seas,
smiling arrives fair Apollo.
And hark! the silence as thunder flees,
wind drops and waves they soon follow.
And smilingly o’er us holds he sway,
with power his singing it owns the day,
his singing is high and it gently is strong.
passion wins and it triumphs in song.
When phantoms afflict your benighted mind,
indulge in love’s pleasure – they’ll vanish.
If, pressing, the darkness your soul it bind,
indulge in love’s pleasure – it banish.
If a horrid enemy’s onslaught shames,
his yoke will be split by caresses’ claims;
behold, it upends, on its head it turns
and shame in his face it now burns.
Is there any immune to his gentle skill?
Who by language of love’s unvanquished?
Earth and heaven – fathom they both his will,
the air and the mind – his language.
Behold how the calcified breasts he frees,
how raises corpses from sleep his breeze,
how flowers and leaves he entwines in chain:
he dares us to dream again.
You’ll never really find a wicked man;
one feebler than other there’s ever.
Good’s abundance in people accords with plan,
flickers light sporadic, however.
For see, half the virtues in smile are found
and wicked thoughts are submerged and drowned;
when, open, the heart is to all displayed,
God is close to the ones he has made.
