New York has so many skyscrapers. You know how many skyscrapers other cities have? Probably a lot as well. That’s the point.

An ax age. A sword age. Shields are broken.

It's a line from the Voluspa, the viking poem that describes Ragnarok. I always like a powerful bit of poetic imagery.
Mere "anxiety," as Heidegger says, is at the source of everything.
-Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus

If i remember correctly it goes - in translation ......

Brothers shall fight and fell each other,
And sisters sons shall kinship stain.
Hard it is on Earth with mighty whoredom.
Axe Time, Sword Time, shields are sundered,
Wind Time, Wolf Time, err the World falls.
Nor shall men each other spare.

:D

One of my favourite poems. Good choice Bert.

The viking age is full of nothing if not wonderful poetry, and also bloody murder. Relevant to both, I stumbled upon this snippet yesterday:

Sword leaps from my scabbard.
Swift, as my heart lifts it.

-Viga-Glum’s Saga

Less poetic, but still quite a paragraph to find in a eight-hundred year old piece of high literature, was the following:

Glum turned for home, and laughing broke out in him; he was so moved that turned pale in the face, and from his eyes there such tears that they were like hailstones. He was often so moved later, when the killing mood was in him.
Mere "anxiety," as Heidegger says, is at the source of everything.

When a woman says she won't, it is a good sign that she will. And when she says she will it is an even better sign.

H. L. Mencken

I read Mencken on the toilet - exclusively. I think he would have liked that fact. I know I do.
