Hey Let's Go Camping!!! (Psych Forums Meetup)

Postby seanetal » Tue Sep 05, 2006 3:10 am

Hey all,

In another forum a big discussion was started about getting together and going camping. I really like the idea and would like to hear what you all think about it.

I think we could probably set up meetings for each region of the US (Northeast, Southeast, North Plains, Mountains, Southwest, and Northwest - not sure how many Hawaii and Alaska folks we have but they are welcome to set up more local ones at home if they can't travel).

These meetups would be a come at your own risk, in other words Psych Forums would hold no responsibility for the safety of anyone attending or their property (remember we're a small company so we don't have the money for big insurance policies and stuff).

Let me know in this thread what you think about the idea and also if you have any ideas about where we can camp. We want fun places but hopefully cheap since everyone would have to pay for their own trip. We'd also need to set each event up for a different weekend and make sure that they don't conflict with any of the trade shows we'll be doing next year.

I think we'd need a minimum of about 15 people at each event to make it interesting. Who knows if the regional events work out, then maybe we'll take on the planning for a bigger event in 2008.

i know ohio isn't very fun or interesting, but there are tons of relatively cheap places to camp. a nice place would be the indiana dunes national lakeshore about an hour from chicago on the coast of lake michigan. it's $15 a tent, but ussually there aren't too many people camping and it's pretty safe and clean.
not sure if i've survived. . .

I'm all for the idea... I can try to check on places in the Southeast. But, being limited on time, if someone could help me with it, I would appreciate it...

I like the idea. Here in Michigan we have several lovely camping grounds. My family....except for my husband, loves to go camping. I would be willing to oversee an event like this.

Initially there was a glimmer of prospect...as there a diff between a get away and a safe house. And i believe "safe houses" are intitled to a percentage of government funding. You'd just need investors to buy or lease property in the bush. Build a multi-room lodge or cabin, to be a place for people to get away to. Also "come at your own risk" dosent give people peace of mind as there are people on here who are teenagers and there need's to be some accountablility and responsibility....so signing a waiver or something would make sense to give there parents some peace of mind.

And like sadgurl said, alot of people have no money, or car......plus a few of us are in canada so its like being a child in school again....you cant come to my party, so i should go off to the side and brood. Also you have to take into account peoples issues. If a few of you decided to make a trip of it great, more power to you. But as an organized event for alot of people things would have to be set up properly. My 2 cents.

Jamie,

The problem is that you are asking me to take on a task that would be a full time job, and running these sites is already a full time job. On top of that I am the only full-time person this company can afford right now, and we simply don't have enough resources to take on a task like this. As for the government funds for running the kind of shelter you are talking about, we don't have a track record and the government has cut funding to such projects recently. I wouldn't even know where to begin with searching for grants.

What I proposed is as far as we are willing and able to go. As it is, I will likely not be able to attend any but the closest camping trip to me unless I can find someone who is willing to pick me up at an airport and give me a ride to the campground.

I'm sorry we weren't able to meet your dreams, but I am doing the best I can.

Also who said this was limited to the US? Hell we have a good number of visitors in Canada. Also who said it was limited to just you... why couldn't you bring one of your parents along?

lol, i liked that. I was just thinking out loud...i totally sympathize with all the stress and pain that would be required to construct such a place. But yeah, it is a nice dream.....my family own's hundreds of acres of unflatned land, real dense bush in quebec that connects to a national park. Perhaps i should look into such a thing.....a free get away for people with psychological and emotional issues. Camedy being the focal point of the theraputic experince combined with a quite nature oriented atmosphere. meh.

A parent?, i'm an adult and i'm not very fond of my parents as is. But i'd expect people would do that.

I think your idea is great.

Hmm, would setting up a fund for such an event be possible....through a paypal or something, so if someone chose to do so they could contribute a dollar or two, even just a few cents. People on the site or those passing through ect. I've read of people doing that.
