Apps that can help with internet addiction?

Postby Osa » Tue Jan 23, 2018 2:54 am

On my smart phone, I've used Screentime and Mobicip together and they've worked well on that.

However, I now work from home on a a company desktop computer with home unlimited high-speed internet and with the security features on my computer, it's driving me bonkers.

If it weren't for my job, I would not have home highs-speed internet. Instead, I'd have just my basic phone plan with reasonable monthly data and Screentime and Mobicip to control my phone. But I have no solution for my computer because it's not mine and so I can't download anything effective.

Any advice?

Sometimes Osa , there isn't " an app for that " .

It falls to us to enforce the boundaries we set for ourselves . Addictions try to convince us that we need to feed them . The reality is that we don't have to feed them and like a toddler denied the toy it really , really wants , the addiction will kick up a host of unpleasant sensations and reactions , in hopes that you just give in from sheer exhaustion and do what it wants you to do .

Also like any tantruming toddler , it is capable of being distracted . It is also capable of learning that No means No . This takes time and effort . It is also not a comfortable or pleasant process . You are effectively re-training your brain to deny a compulsion .

Is it easy ? No , it isn't . But it's not impossible .

I know how addicting internet is, especially since it's really accessible nowadays. I have been in this phase as well and I was able to stumble upon different apps which helped me control this internet addiction. Here are some examples:

-OffTime
-QualityTime
-SelfControl
-Stay On Task

Don't rely on these apps though. Try to come up with a daily schedule as well, for you to limit your time on social media.

Hi,

There is a Reddit forum called nosurf that maintains a list of software programs that you can use to set limits on your software use. Are you allowed to use either Chrome or Firefox? If you can install browser plugins such as Chrome's StayFocusd or Block Site those can help. I'm a new user, and I looked at the forum posting guide, and it looks like I'm not allowed to post links, or I'd link to the nosurf reddit.

Another alternative you can use is to install a router on your home internet service, between your desktop computer and the internet. You can install software on the router in between the computer and the internet as a whole. There's all sorts of filters you can use to do that.

What I would recommend doing is to buy the router and then configure it, then get someone else to change the password on the router so you can't alter the filters.

If you need more help with internet addiction issues, there is also a support group called Internet and Technology Addicts Anonymous that has meetings by telephone daily. I don't think I can post a link (again I'm new and that looks to be against the rules), but they are listed as a link on the wikipedia page for Internet Addiction Disorder. If you just google for "Internet and Technology Addicts Anonymous" the link to the website comes up pretty low, on the second or third page of results. The top results for "Internet and Technology Addiction Anonymous" is actually a fake listing that an expensive tech rehab center put up but that doesn't have any actual meetings.
