I think I was mis diagnosed.

Postby craycray4life » Tue Jun 02, 2015 10:09 pm

Hello,

So i wanted to get a second opinion for a personality disorder diagnosis. Turns out the doctor just wrote his opinion of out 6 hours of interaction between us. He didn't administer any personality tests according to my final report. Instead he wrote in Axis 2: Deffered. And in Axis 1: Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder.

I read that Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder is intended for a diagnosis in children under 18. The problem with this is I am 29 years old and have never been diagnosed with Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder ever, plus it's a new addition to the DSM V. I am so mad at this point I don't know how to make sense of this idiotic mistake. What should I do?

It depends on what you want to do. Is it the diagnosis which is causing you upset? You could ask for a second opinion from a different doctor, or go back to the first and calmly discuss your reservations, or you could just leave it. I'm in the all diagnosis are labels camp, and while sure it can be useful to label a group of symptoms together for the purposes of treatment, you are you, an individual not a diagnosis. Why do you feel the diagnosis is upsetting and what would you label it as?

I feel like you didn't read the second paragraph for the diagnostic criteria and my age. Paying someone almost 1,000.00 dollars for an inaccurate diagnosis is ###$ up. It seriously makes no sense to me how I should seek treatment for a disorder only meant to be diagnosed in children under 18. I will just talk to Vocational rehabilitation center and ask them for advice. Thank you for a response. You sound so calm and I ######6 wish I was level headed.

Yes, I did read the second paragraph and the diagnostic criteria, and took the time to read a paper on the subject following your response. The literature does state the disorder is typically found in children.

I don't think not reading the second paragraph was the issue, by way of background I live in the UK and am involved with the NHS. Healthcare is free in the UK so getting a second opinion would make sense here and is what I would advise as it would cost nothing to the Px. I agree paying someone 1000's dollars for a Dx seems messed up to me too, (and one reason why I would never live in the U.S!) I don't know the organisation of which you speak but surely there must be some recourse and perhaps one of my US qualified friends would be better placed to advise in such a case.

We have Obama Care and Vocational rehabilitation center where I got my first diagnosis for PD. You are wrong. You have to be under 18 to receive a diagnosis for disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder and NOT diagnosed with it for the first time ever after 18 years of age. Continue to disregard what I said and i will provide visual proof.

No worries, I remain of the opinion if you are unhappy with a diagnosis and you feel it is unhelpful to you, you should seek a second opinion. Best of luck.
