Need Serious Help

Postby thebinge » Fri Apr 15, 2011 1:15 am

I've been suffering with insomnia now for two months, basically can't fall asleep and when I do it usually only lasts for two hours if I'm lucky. I've been to my family doctor numerous times already who has prescribed me Ambien (worked for about 4 hours then lost its effectiveness), Restoril (didn't work at all), Celexa for four weeks (didn't help at all), and finally Vistaril (doesn't really help). The next step he wants me to do is a sleep study even though he said I probably don't have sleep apnea. I would have to pay for all of the cost ($2700!) so I don't want to go through this when apnea probably isn't the issue. I've tried herbal supplements, chamomile tea/warm milk before bed, antihistamines, etc. and nothing really works. I'm trying to be more active (biking, walking, weights) during the day per his suggestions but I'm not sleeping any better. For some reason my body just won't "drift off" like it used to and it seems like I'm right away in a dream state which I wake up from unrefreshed. Just looking for any other suggestions anyone here might have. Help!

Hi, thebinge! Have you tried stuff like hypnosis? Have you ever been through something traumatic, especially associated with night time or bed? Maybe a new combination of meds might help, you could ask your doctor. Just tell them that test is too expensive and you want to try other options, maybe they'll come up with something new.

Thanks for the response, I'm actually seeing a neurologist who specializes in sleep disorders Thursday. Maybe he can prescribe something different or offer other suggestions. Nothing traumatic has happened, just suddenly couldn't sleep well anymore. . . :(

Hi binge-

On a positive note, you've only been experiencing this for two months. It could stop as abruptly as it started, especially since nothing traumatic has happened. I've been dealing with insomnia since middle school and have taken anti-deps, benzos, prescription and non rx sleeping meds and have had the best results with bikram yoga and the herbal teas Dr. Lad's tranquility formula and Good night sleep formula tea. You can order them at *edited by admin- sorry, you can't post this link on the open site* I am in know way financially affiliated with this, I was just sick of riding the drug gravy train. Regular yoga can help too (Bikram is very HOT, 120 degrees). If you are willing to try the natural approach give it a shot. It hasn't just suppressed my insomnia, depression, and anxiety but has helped to healit.
All the best to comrade.

Neuro has prescribed me 0.5 mg of Klonopin. Should be interesting if this drug has any affect tonight. I'm also going back for an EMG test next week as I've had burning/stinging sensations in my legs/arms on occasion especially at night.
