This all began in late 2012 and I have rarely slept a night where I have not woken up after 3 hours. The situation has caused severe depression and fatigue and I feel like I'm only half of a person that I once was! Before 2012, I was sleeping normally and would get a full 8 hours without waking up. Unfortunately, those days are long over and I'm only averaging 5-6 on 'good' nights!
Coincidentally, I correlated my insomnia with my wifi and smart phone usage, which I introduced into my life in 2012, which was when I started getting severe insomnia. I noticed that I'm unable to go into the deeper stages of sleep and I easily awaken. Since then, I have reduced my wifi/cell phone usage but I still wake up after 3 hours! I don't know if the radiation from my electronic devices has permanently altered my brain or not.
From my extensive research, I learned that Insomnia is actually a symptom of something else. So it is quiet possible that it is linked to radiation from my wireless devices. In late May of this year, I did an experiment to prove it was my smartphone that was contributing to my sleep maintenance insomnia. During those 7 days, I completely stopped using my phone and I noticed that my sleep improved and I was able to get deeper sleep. However, I simply cannot live without my phone and I'm trying to find an alternative. I have an iPhone and I learned that you can hook it up to the ethernet cable and are able to get internet without all the negative affects of radiation. I'll be doing that very soon and will see if that helps improve my situation. If it does, I'll be writing back..
I have tried many things since then.
-Sleep at strict time schedule
- Eliminate all caffeine & sugar
- Exercise in the morning
- Take valerian before bedtime
- Take Chamomile tea Evening/night
- Filter blue light from devices
- Melatonin supplementation
Unfortunately, none of these have helped and I continue to always awaken after 3 hours!
Well anyways, it's good to know that I'm not the only one with this problem and would appreciate any feedback.
Hey Leila! One thing i've noticed is that using electronics (laptop, phone) really disturbs my sleep. I remember going on a trip overseas and for the first week I didn't have wifi at my hostel (same wifi thing you've noticed) and for that week I slept superbly well. With no wifi I had no reason to look at my phone and didnt use it at night at all. Unfortuntately we live in such a digitally connected world that its pretty much impossible nowadays to not use wifi.
I've found this article that I thought was quite useful
http://www.holistichelp.net/blog/how-to ... glutamate/ I do believe that my problem is also related to neurotransmitter issues that just cannot calm themselves down. I've since started taking Taurine, Vitamin B6 and magensium every night. And I guess it makes an alright difference. Since doing this though, I've noticed that protein shakes make me really sleepy. Probably because I have excessive GAD enzyme in my brain due to taking vitamin B6 and taurine. So I take a casein shake at night, which has actually helped me sleep a little bit longer. I say i sleep for around 3.5-4 hours now before waking up. And any improvement is a welcome one.
