Sudden onset of insomnia

2 1/2 weeks ago, I suddenly had severe trouble falling asleep every single night. Once I get to sleep, I'm usually okay. Usually. But it can take me 5+ hours to get to sleep.
What makes it so weird is I've had hypersomnia for years. I could fall asleep on Adderall, Vyvanse, etc. I started modafinil 2 months ago and I've fallen asleep on it. I'd sleep 12-20 hours a day, which I HATED. But I have never in my life had this much issues getting to sleep unless I was fully manic (type 1 bipolar disorder). I am certainly not manic now. I've tried benzos, hydroxyzine, any sedating stuff I had lying around, including promethazine. Most of the time, those didn't work. So I usually don't bother, plus I don't like to take my valium too often.

I just don't get why this suddenly happened. Now I'm sleeping 6-10hrs/night but it takes me a ridiculously long time to fall asleep. I got in bed at 9:30pm. It is now 2:20am.
I feel exhausted constantly. I know it doesn't help that I'm in pain due to my Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (and I think I've torn a rotator cuff due to it), but damn. I'm tired!

Any ideas? Not interested in Ambien. I know I took it years ago once or twice and had super bad hallucinations. My pdoc doesn't like prescribing it anyway because he's seen too many people do dangerous sleep walking activities.
Thinking maybe about asking for remeron. I just can't believe that after 6+ years of hypersomnia and falling asleep at the drop of a hat, very suddenly I can't get to sleep! I mean, why? I have a load of medical issues. I'm on a lot of meds. Tried stopping the modafinil....still had insomnia. Tried stopping the tiny dose of methyldopa I was put on not long ago. No change. I did have half my thyroid removed a month ago, but all my labs are in range...no flipping to hyperthyroidism. I'm at a loss and I'm not used to coping with insomnia. I have never, ever had this issue before. Ideas?
