Afraid I have Sporadic Fatal Insomnia

I've been sleep deprived now for 3 days. I haven't been able to become tired. My body feels tired but my mind is wide awake. I've never had trouble sleeping before now. I tried melatonin and it didn't do much at all. I was also prescribed Temazepam and that put me to sleep for only one hour. I'm having other symptoms too such as leg spasms, elevated heart rate, weakness in the legs, and loss of appetite. I do suffer from anxiety, but I've never experienced this before. I set up an appt. with a neurologist for Monday, but I honestly don't think I'll be able to get tired before then. I'm extremely scared right now and can't concentrate or remember things at all. My question is has anyone had symptoms similar to mine and figured out what was causing them?

Quick question.. do you drink/eat any caffeinated products at all?

If you do then it's more than possible that this is the cause - can't say for sure so do talk to your doc since there's probably a ton of other things that can cause the symptoms but caffeine can certainly cause the symptoms you describe.
Anxiety can also cause the symptoms as i'm sure you're aware - i know it's awful to suddenly get a new load of symptoms and there's little to rival the scariness of thinking you might die in your sleep but chances are incredibly high that you don't have sporadic fatal insomnia.

Hello Seal how is your sleeping now? i have not been able to sleep for 30 days/nights now i feel like im going crazy at this point the onset of this started about 49 days/nights ago i have not gotten much sleep at all really during this and am not sure how i am still functioning i went to doc and all he said is that it is to soon to tell i i have the form of fatal insomnia and gave me trazodone sleep med i am
feeling bad effects of this very badly i am feeling so strange that i cannot stand it almost my mind is going slowly i make spelling mistakes and get confused easily have not been back to doc yet but need to go the only test that can be done for sporadic form of fatal insomnia is by eeg and pet scan for the brain and the inherited form of the disease can be detected by genetic testing for the gene along with eeg for brain and pet scan. i am not sure i have this as well!

ouch to lacking sleep or that length of time mdh83 - I really hope that it isn't SFI and that your doc is able to help soon and you can sleep properly again.

I'm sure you've already looked into this and thought of it but did anything happen 49 days/nights ago that could possibly have caused your insomnia.?
Where did you hear about sporadic fatal insomnia?

I,m sorry i mean about 36 days and nights and have not been able to sleep good most of this time yea i hope i can get a sleep study soon!
