Filfresh (Melatonin) long term or short term

Postby vishva » Sat Oct 03, 2015 1:49 pm

Does Filfresh (Melatonin) have a long term therapeutic effect other than helping to sleep at a specific time..

I mean, does it have benefit in continuing the Melatonin course even after the problem of sleeping is solved by other medication.. (Escitalopram in morning and Risperidone at night which I know I should continue)

Before the treatment I had sleepless nights till 3~4am, my head would hurt that it needs sleep, but I was unable to fall sleep (due to high anxiety), and I would feel extremely drowsy at day time that I couldn't do my job properly. Now everything has changed for good, thanks to Escitalopram and Risperidone. Melatonin 3mg was very helpful during the first week, but I couldn't find it in any nearby pharmacy.

Hi,

I'm not a professional so take it with a very large grain of salt. But I recall reading (when I was using melatonin myself) that it isn't good to take it short term because your brain gets lazy, so to say, and stops producing its own melatonin due to receiving regular deliveries from outside. Which would suggest it's not so good to go on with it. But 100% honestly I don't know if what I just quoted is correct.
Currently working on my upcoming signature.

Thanks for the info, I'll search more on that. Before I started medication I was having almost no sleep, and it was HELL; so at that time Melatonin seemed to be a life saver. But now I can sleep even if I would skip the Melatonin, since Risperidone would lower my Seratonin for the night.

So, I will most probably skip the Melatonin for now and tell my therapist when I meet her next weekend. I'm thinking to take it only if there would ever be trouble sleeping.

If I delay the Risperidone, still I cannot sleep, so I guess it is Seratonin playing the major role in my sleep. But I'm still taking Lexapro in the morning to inhibit re-uptake of Seratonin.

All this is new to me, but I would like to read and learn about those as I'm taking. I believe that understanding my meds will be helpful in treatment and recovery process..
