[Seeking Advice]Insomnia... Or something else...?

Postby SeekerTheNightOwl » Tue May 27, 2014 3:57 am

Hello Psychforums.com; I'm sorry for the vague title, but I'm in quite a dire situation and honestly, I think this is the best shot I have at receiving help. Hear me out, but things are slightly complicated...

I'm 17 years old, and it hasn't been long (like, 6-7 months, ish) since my psychiatrist finished her job and designated me as having ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome. Since the second week of august (yup, that long) I haven't had school to worry about, so I've just been kicking back and enjoying my interests, the girlfriend, playing D&D with a friend using skype and video games, without going out much.

Of course you all know how this turns out, because the 'video games'-part was signing my own sleep-death certificate, with my sleep cycle, rythm or whatever fancy word is used (you get the point) being slightly messed up, to put it softly. I'm usually doing very long sessions of being awake, followed by a moderate-large amount of sleep. Problem is that I've recently been accepted at a school/daytime offer for autists, and I really don't want to screw it up. I'm scheduled for a start up meeting tomorrow, which should be bearable, seeing as I've had my 'insomnia night' today, but I'd really love some advice to get my sleep cycle back on track.

Other information that might complicate things further (I'm sorry): I'm a coffee drinker (no coffee near bedtime of course), an ex-smoker and current vaper and I'm taking prescription ADHD medication (concerta, to be exact)

Thanks in advance,

Seeker, the night owl.

Like, you sleep late at night and wake up late? Waking up in the between or something? Or you are awake for like 20h and then sleep another bunch of long hours?

I'd try to lay off the videogames and try for some days to go to bed at like midnight or so. It might solve the problem. If not, well at least you can rule out that all the activities you are having are more engaging than sleep to you. Which would be the time to talk to some doctor about it.

BTW I don't have enough knowledge about this, but I guess ADHD meds can cause insomnia. And so can caffeine and nicotine.
