I turned my sleep around

Postby sleepanswers » Tue Jan 21, 2014 2:50 am

I had severe insomnia for 20 years. I've tried just about every remedy out there--melatonin, SAD light, different pillows, new bed, etc. I'd been to several doctors and sleep specialists to no avail. I was tested for sleep apnea (didn't have it). My dr. put me on lexapro (even though I wasn't depressed), which i stayed on for several years. I tried Neurontin, Ambien, lunesta, lorazepam (Ativan), over the counter sleep aids, and none of those worked either. I decided to get off all the drugs because 1) they weren't helping, 2) I wasn't depressed, just sleep-deprived, 3) I started having memory lapses from the Ambien, and 4) I would get rebound insomnia from taking the meds. So I cut down little by little and finally got off everything. (that was the hardest part for me). I started seeing a sleep specialist who helped me a little with cognitive behavior therapy. But it wasn't until I actually started to stop thinking negatively about my sleep and having faith in my body's ability to sleep that I began to sleep well. Now I get at least 7 hours of sleep or more almost every night. (I was getting about 3-4--5 hours/night). I used to resent people who told me "it's all in your mind," but it's true. You have to change your beliefs and really know deep down that you can sleep. Sleep comes from within, not from external fixes.

It turned my life around. I'm happier and don't feel brain-dead all the time anymore. I'm considering writing a book about how I accomplished this, with concrete steps to take to turn your sleep around. I'm wondering if this would be something people would be interested in. I know it worked for me, but I'm not a doctor nor do I have any special credentials.

Was cognitive behavior therapy involved in you removing negative thoughts about sleep? Can you elaborate on what you did? Thanks
