Graduation from therapy

Postby anthropologie » Wed Jul 20, 2011 1:27 am

Hello! Feel free to discuss this topic; I'm opening it to ask for a bit of advice though.

I've been in and out of therapy for five years now. Last year was especially intense, but I got a good therapist out of it. The program I'm in was meant to eject me when I turned 19; I was supposed to graduate into the adult program, but my therapist deemed it unnecessary to do so as the adult system was too...complex?medical? for my condition. I've gained many skills to deal with myself now, so my therapist brought up the topic of graduating me out of therapy all together. The idea scares me; I'm much more able to deal with outbursts now, but since the outbursts tend to be seasonal, I'm afraid they'll return in the winter. Our sessions are getting shorter and shorter though, and I feel like I'm wasting her time...

When should I stop therapy?

Maybe you should tell her you're worried and explain why too. If she doesn't seem to understand, you could ask her where you can get a second opinion (or find out on your own, if she might get offended).
Even if the outbursts return somewhat, you're much stronger now and you know how to get help.
