If so what are some symptoms?
It is easy enough to be friendly to one's friends. But to befriend the one who regards himself as your enemy is the quintessence of true religion. The other is mere business.

Of course we do. I have had my official diagnosis for over 2 years now. Between a battery of shrinks and I we have worked out that I have exhibited the symptoms for well over 20 years.
We can have all or a combination of the same symptoms that women have they just play out slightly differently is all.
There used to be a pretty good variety of male HPD's here, in fact there used to be a pretty good variety of HPD's here period but those days are over now.

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Yes, men can have HPD, with pretty much the same symptoms displayed in women. Do you suspect that you may have it?

I once heard that men have HPD in the same degree as women do, but that it's missed there a lot more often. My guess would be that it has something to do with the clichée about women in general and HPD.

At least one self-described male HPD on this forum seemed like he might have brought attention himself through body building.

If using their physique for attention, and maybe mistaken for somatic Narcissists, my best guess is like their female counterparts male HPD's would logically fall under the Vivacious HPD subtype. But, 'vivacious' isn't an adjective normally applied to males...maybe 'Apollonic,' 'Adonic,' or 'Suave,' ...something along those lines (?)

i.e., the 'Adonic Male HPD subtype.'

maybe outwardly hard to distinguish from the Phallic (Don Juan) NPD subtype

I once read, that HPD is mostly a female form of narcissism.
I don't know if I would agree with that, but they seem to be highly overlapping.

I also don't know the specific reasons why HPD will propably fall out of the next DSM-V. I also wonder what those dx with HPD now, will get dx with?

So, it's really the question, if some forms described under NPD aren't the same as some forms of HPD?

I guess mental health professionals are never going to be in total agreement because there is a lot of overlap. I suppose some combination of social/genetic influences could make it easier to succeed at one coping mechanism versus another.

Stereotype, but the NPD types I've known seem to focus more of their need for affirmation through their social status, and accomplishments (e.g., success at work, position in the community, net worth, etc.). A dramatic male may be more generally frowned on in our society, but a successful one is rewarded. A male may generally be less successful 'flirting', especially if women find him unattractive. So maybe it's a matter of what coping mechanisms 'work' for a person that leads them down one path versus another, while the underlying issues are similar in nature?
