My HPD sister-in-law claims cancer and back problems...but they only flare up when she wants to divert peoples attention from something bad that's going on - like when she lost her business, or when she has a big court date for a lawsuit against her or when they are in the midst of losing their house (for the thrid time now). We've seen her skipping (yes skipping) down a path at her sister's wedding, when she thought that no one could see her - she looked up, saw us, and knew she was busted. Not 5 minutes later, she had my husband helping her up a flight of stairs because her back hurt so badly.

The whole cancer thing - she never showed a sign. Never allowed her husband, my brother, to go to an appointment with her because he "made her nervous". Would never let anyone drive her to her "radiation appointments" even though they won't let you drive yourself. And then the cancer magically goes into remission as soon as the current crisis is over.

Oh and then everytime she needed attention she would get some sort of minor physical ailment that would allow her to moan and whine so people would give sympathy.

Oh and then there was the time she didnt want my brother to go on an annual two day hunting trip so she claimed a torn uterous, but once again she wouldn't let anyone take her to or home from the doctor and once he was home, we never heard another word.

Oh and the whole cancer thing....she also uses it each time that someone close to the family or actual family is getting married. About two weeks beforehand she'll start in that her cancer is back and how she will be losing her hair and blah, blah, blah. It's like she can't stand that the attention is on someone else, so she trys to make the whole occasion about her.

Believe me - I could go on

<---Here exploring the possibility that I may be HPD...thought I would add...I have knee problems, due to malaligned hips from birth...its an actual bad problem but I tend to really exaggerate any kind of thing like that...I guess I enjoy the attention I get from it, in a weird way I am almost excited whenever I hurt myself. Xmas eve 2000 I fell down my stairs and broke my ankle and little skinny bone in my leg and had to have surgery on xmas morning...it was the worst xmas ever but I was actually excited about telling the story to everybody and getting attention at work. This is part of what confuses me about whether I am HPD because I am able to be very introspective about these types of things and know they are bad behavior yet they are real parts of my personality.

My hpd had chronic stomach problems -- ulcers, terrible pains, that sort of thing. In her case, I don' think she was making them up (of course, I could be wrong about that), but they always seemed to flare up at moments when she either wanted to avoid doing something (holidays, my birthday) or when she wanted attention.

I do think that her stomach problems were real, but I also think they were caused by the constant stress that comes with living several lies at once. And that they were real didn't stop her from using them whenever she felt like it.
