Religious hpd types?

Postby under ice » Tue May 10, 2016 7:05 am

Since religion is a delicate topic, I'll start with a disclaimer: I'm neither trying to attack religious people here nor criticizing every single one of them, just sharing something I've noticed when dealing with a handful of individuals I've known for quite some time. Since I'm no expert on hpd I'd like to hear better informed opinions on my subjective observations.

I'm thinking about the type who tend to explain even little everyday problems in religious/mystical terms. I mean, if there is a delay or something, it was 'sent from Above to protect us from a potential traffic accident' or something like that. Moreover, while being apparently helpful and supportive (because it's what they are supposed to do according to their religion) these people use religious jargon and cookie-cutter replies in a way that is very impersonal, even when talking to their family members and friends. An example of this sort of exchange would be: Family member A: 'I'm feeling so bad because I failed my exams, I haven't been able to sleep for a week because of it.' Family member B: ' Oh, I'm sure that *insert deity* will make everything all right again'. This kind of reply is impressionistic and lacking in detail in my opinion, and while it's supposed to be a positive reply it works like a mental wall that makes it possible to evade any genuine interaction between two people who know each other well.

Another trait that seems in sync with hpd is the way these people are always on the prowl to help people hear the 'good news', mimicking to befriend them, but eventually moving on to the next target.

The last thing I've noticed has to do with their appearance and behaviour: these guys often either dress to impress or in a provocative way, talk and laugh unnecessarily loud around people and keep constantly checking if anyone notices them.

While I'm aware that not everyone with religious beliefs is like this, I'm wondering if religious communities offer a comfortable niche for certain kind of hpd's. Thanks for any opinions.

Either this was uninteresting or I hit the nail on the head.

I've found this post interesting, so I'll see further updates.

I remember once reading a book (of catholic background) that claimed that people followed spiritism because of their sentimentalism.

Some people, but usually, I believe the type will be more comfortable in unique spiritualism, like talking to the dead, or things like that. Mediums and so on. Traditional religions usually frown on those things if it is too overt, but in Catholicism, there is some spiritualist movements, that they call charismatic, which would fit well with big displays of emotions of the loving kind, as well as many excentricities. Some protestant groups are like that as well. There is also a lot of gurus of the Indian kind or Buddhist kind, that when they come to the west, act like this. Although most sects will do love bombing at first, so it is in a way, structural. It just works that way. Some will fake it, like Rael, or scientology, because they know it works well.

In all spiritual communities I've seen, and I've seen a few in my time because of my explorations, there exist theatricals and manipulation as well as relationship/sexual tensions and drama. These can be very subtle too, but they are there, although it could be that the majority of people are unaware of it. Cult of personality is a big part of the picture.

Anyway, I was hoping that the original post would get comments from members with traits of hpd, maybe even some who recognize they have something in common with the kind of people I described. If there is a religious 'subtype' of hpd's, then they are probably useful for their community and don't know anything about this type of online support groups.

Yes indeed. My wife is a very assertive Christian woman who will often use the cover of "witnessing" to others as a means of getting their attention. Once she's gotten their attention, it becomes an all-inclusive relationship where she wants and needs to know everything that person is doing, who their friends are, what they're reading... she'll want time alone with them, she'll want to attend to their every need, she'll spend time talking with them all day long, texting back and forth, then do the same thing during the evenings when it's supposed to be our time together as husband and wife. She seems to crave being the center of the universe to all these people and it's frustrating for me. I'm not jealous, just a bit tired of never being at the top of her friends list.
