Group therapy makes HPD's worse as they tend to dominate the group by demanding to be the star patient or making sure the focus of attention is almost always on them by just about any means necessary.
They need therapy that is one on one with a mental health professional that will not get caught up in their dramatics but force them to face the deep internal issues of their life by teaching them how to think more clearly among other things.
Anyway your friend sounds all over the map.
Some histrionic traits, some sociopathic ones like the comment on a book being a good guide on how to better manipulate people.
So to me the vibe I'm getting from what you've given is the guy sounds emotionally disturbed as well as possible attention deficit disorder sufferer but hey he needs a real one on one evaluation to tell for sure but at this point he doesn't sound HPD to me or any other Cluster B personality disorder for that matter though he does exhibit a few of their nasty traits.
