This is not a silly question. Please feel free to ask anything on this forum.
Intrusive thoughts are considered a symptom of obsessive compulsive disorder. However, since individuals with OCD frequently experience great anxiety which increases the severity of compulsions, it wouldn't be unusual for someone with generalized anxiety disorder to have intrusive thoughts as well.
If you have severe intrusive thoughts, without compulsions typically associated with obsessive compulsive disorder, you likely have a form of OCD called Pure-O (pure obsession OCD). This is in contrast to classical OCD. Your GAD might worsen the severity of these thoughts.
To summarize, I suggest you might have a combination of GAD and Pure Obsession OCD. This combination does not seem unusual, since both are classified as anxiety disorders.
Intrusive thoughts are characterized by persistent, unwanted images which might be viewed as violent, absurd or sexual in nature. You shouldn’t feel ashamed of these thoughts. Having intrusive thoughts is part of an extremely common form of OCD.
I hope diminished your confusion. Please inform me if this is not the case.
Farewell,
Luciano
