About Defence Mechanisms...

Postby u-drop » Thu Aug 23, 2012 7:41 am

So, I have a question about defence mechanisms...

Do people have their own defence mechanisms unique to them? Lately I've been doing some research on this and about a month ago I realized maybe my anxieties could be minimized if I smartly 'installed' some defence mechanisms. (I do a lot of manipulating with my own mind...). So I had the idea that what if, my mind was wired in such a way that whenever I start to worry or overthink something for much longer than is healthy, I automatically jump into a sort of hyperactive state. I figured that this would only work if it was a subconscious defence mechanism or whatever, so I just let it happen. Now I find that whenever I think about something that makes me feel bad for too long, I seem to automatically just stop doing that and jump into this really happy state that lasts for quite a while. I'm wondering if this is considered a defence mechanism or what it is?

Also about how I like to manipulate my mind, I'm just wondering if that is something, because I'm realizing it's not really normal is it...

Anyway thank you for you answers :)

I think what you're doing is the basis behind CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy. You're teaching your mind to react a different way to certain stressors. I don't think there is anything wrong with what you're doing necessarily. I would make sure that you're still allowing yourself to feel certain emotions and not shutting them off completely. That would be a defense mechanism.
