Are these symptoms of anxiety? Or something else?

Postby mm3 » Sat Dec 24, 2011 5:48 am

I have anxiety (the feeling) but sometimes when I don't feel those panicy and typical anxiety feelings I still get weird thoughts and feelings.
I get thoughts like things are familiar but weird around me. Almost like a dream (I cant figure out if it is or not) and I will feel like usual things are new, Im new to being human, im watching a tv show through my body point of view, just look at things and cant process it (like looking at a picture not real things), sometimes tv seems more real than real life, I feel weird when I do things or talk (like its automatic but where is it coming from I dont understand it completely-where did it come from?), weird foggy thick head and thoughts like when youre really sick and you feel really "out of it". Along with weird "whoa" realizations about simple things like I am a human.. or not feelings like im looking at me in the mirror (recognize myself but seems weird).

That's just some of the things I can think of. Is this normal for "anxiety" or is it something else??
Thanks!

Hi, mm3! I have anxiety too and anxiety attacks, but rarely. I've had some weird thoughts during some of them. It felt like depersonalization or derealization, but I'm not sure. You could check that out.
Have you talked to a doctor about this? It's probably the best thing to do.

Hello mm,
i believe dissociating is very common with anxiety disorder. Jasmin gave you great advice, always check with your primary care doctor first. In most cases, i believe, it is acute, lasting only a few weeks but with some, it can last much longer causing a secondary diagnosis of dissociative disorder. As with anxiety disorder, it is very scary but harmless. are you being treated for your anxiety? if so, you may want to ask your m.d. if this is a side affect. In any case, relax if you can. focusing on it can cause this symptom to last longer. Wish you well my friend

Hello :)

I have read that the symptoms you described - despersonalization and desrealization - can come in two ways:
1. Alone, out of nowhere;
2. Associated with anxiety, post-traumatic stress or panic attacks.

In your case, it is most likely associated with anxiety, but only an specialist can diagnose it. I have also read that medication for anxiety in most cases cures despersonalization and desrealization, but you need to tell your psychiatrist exactly how you feel, so he can recommend a good medication. ;)

On the other hand, physical exercise, sex, washing your face, social relationships, etc, help you with those symptoms, as well as relaxing and not thinking about it - I know it's hard.

Best of luck!
~ IF
