Longing for times in the past? Longing for bliss?

Postby taurenwarrior » Mon Sep 28, 2009 8:07 pm

Hello everyone. My first time posting with a question.

I suffer from GAD as well as Pure O form of OCD.

I know people think about times in the past and reminisce about things, but recently I find that I will think about something in the past (which doesn't necessarily have to be that long ago) that made me very happy or gave me warm fuzzy feelings, and try to re-create it somehow. It's like I'm constantly looking for those moments that gave me almost a blissful feeling and somehow try to relive them again. Even recreate the event somehow so that I can feel that feeling again.

What's odd is that sometimes I can do something that at the time I might not consider overly special...and then a year later I'll think about it from the previous year and have a longing for it!??

Somehow I think it might stem from the fact that since I constantly worry about something bad happening the past might be the only sure thing I have. And that comforts me??

Does anyone else deal with this sort of phenomena?

There's nothing 'phenomenal' or strange about this at all, and everyone does this. im a little surprised that you are questioning it so much, to be honest. You - and everyone else - enjoys recreating good times from our youth, because our youth typically marks a stage in life when we had the least amount of worries - know what I mean? I always tr to recreate my childhood, by looking at old toys in shop windows and listening to old songs or watching old cartoons.

...there really is nothing wrong, strange, or phenomenal about it though.

I guess you're right about that. Sometimes we have thoughts and feelings that we think might be odd...when in fact they are quite common. I appreciate your response!

No problem... ...so what is it that you try to 'rekindle'? The biggest things for me are old computer games, because my entire youth was pretty much spent absdorbed in playing computer games.

I can totally associate with this feeling even though i'm only 21. I have vivid memories of feelings & images of my childhood when things were just "simple" and "easy" compared to now.

I also have a strong association with videogames as Chucky has, and believe me, I spent more time playing old games than the new ones that I buy. I also watch movies that I used to watch when I was little and I must say that it really helps uplift my mood. Also when you live the moment you are engaged into the experience leaving you less room for thinking "how great can this be"!or how great your mood was when you were doing a specific thing.

I can tell you for sure that this isn't something that only you experience.

As was told previously people will do anything to relive experiences that made them happy. It is normal and there is nothing to worry about in my opinion.
