Video Games

Postby sandinmyears » Sun Apr 27, 2008 8:20 pm

Does anyone here notice anxiety getting worse AFTER playing video games-- especially fast ones. I get a surge of adrenaline-- that pit in my stomach and my heart sometimes beats faster when playing some games-- even though I know it's only a computer. Afterward, I seem to be having more problems with anxiety-- even hours later.

What do you call those anxiety incidents anyway? I don't call them attacks because I'm still able to function-- I just keep feeling very ill at ease. The adrenaline doesn't want to stop.

It's very simple. Video games, although they give that adrenaline rush they cause anxiety because the player is trying to win. So you are tense, you get upset if you don't achieve your goal, then you do it all over again, and the cycle just goes round and round.
I don't play video/computer games anymore because of this. I might try a strategy game or something that is slow paced and lets me have more time to analyze. Although I havn't played a game for about six months now.
I mean if you want to keep playing them and you can still function then that's cool keep on playin. I wish I could do that. I have a hard time just BEING on the computer surfing the net as it is. I also cannot watch thrillers, horror movies, etc. without actually having an anxiety attack....which really sucks :(

I suffer from severe anxiety issues, and I actually use gaming as an informal therapy. However, I'm basing this on my personal experiences, and there are limitations to the effectiveness. It's all about being aware of my mental state. Obviously, competitive play doesn't help. Also, not all games are fast paced action games. It's all about maintaining a relaxed mind. Since this is a relevant subject, some games are actually cleverly (and not so cleverly) designed mental exercises, the professor layton series, and the more obvious brain age games are good examples. But I can't stress this enough: you MUST be aware of your threshold, and should not be attempted during certain circumstances. Follow any health and safety guidelines as if your life depends on it. It's only effective in maintaining a good mood, not to calm yourself down if you're suddenly freaked out.
Disclaimer: I'm by no means a professional and this post is not intended to be a subsstitute for professional advice. If misused, this method can have cause a sudden and prolonged state of anxiety. Treat this with extreme scrutiny and attempt on your sole discretion.
