Blood pressure medication in the treament of anxiety

Postby Riccola » Tue Aug 15, 2017 9:00 pm

Is blood pressure mediation recommended for treating blood pressure spikes caused by anxiety/panic? My concern is that once the anxiety attack is over, I am fearful of blood pressure dropping below normal possibly causing fainting- but its just a guess on my part. Should BP meds even be considered or should sedatives by tried first?

Do you monitor your BP? It will vary up and down throughout the day depending on your activity, etc.
I take BP meds for hypertension. It isn't particularly because of anxiety or emotional angst. It is partly hereditary. Proper diet is important.
Any meds like sedatives should be cleared with your doctor. Discuss options first.
Fainting from low BP sounds extreme. Has it ever happened to you?

Never fainted, but I have chronic anxiety and angst and my blood pressure is always in the stage 2 hyper tension side- during excessive worry or panic attacks it sky rockets. Sadly I do not monitor it, but multiple readings at the doctors over the years keep coming up in stage 2.

Has the doctor ever suggested BP meds? Does HBP run in your family?
I am on med for metabolism maintenance purposes for 'elevated' BP. The meds keep it fairly regulated and normal (120/80).
I did have side-effects (swelling, itching ankles) on one med. They said to stop taking it immediately and called in another med for me to try. That one has worked well without side-effects.
I would suggest talking to your doctor about what med to try. I would avoid sedatives if you are working or driving, etc. There are safer solutions.
They may want to address the anxiety separately?

The doctor is suggesting BP meds, but he in particular does not know the extent of my anxiety. No HBP history in the family. I'm thinking the anxiety needs to be addressed via meds because of its severity.

My doctor would refer me to a psych specialist in this case as her field is that of a physician. Your doctor should be receptive to treating all aspects of your health and should listen to any concerns you may have.
I have to fill out a questionnaire about my physical and mental states before an appointment and we talk about how to deal with them during the visit.
She will not diagnose or prescribe meds for issues that are not within her realm of expertise. She will instead write a referral slip to make an appointment with a specialist within the healthcare network.
My anxiety was treated by anti-depression meds.
I have been pleased with the results.
