Anxiety Medication reviews?

Postby acbee » Thu Dec 22, 2016 4:24 am

Hey all,
I was recently prescribed citalopram for generalized anxiety. I was told to take it either evening or morning and chose evening after reading up on what others had said. for the first month, I felt like I was on cloud nine. sleeping super great, my mind was clearer, I felt so productive. Then roughly a month in I started not being able to sleep through the night and so I tried to switch over to taking them in the morning, hated the way I felt when I did remember to take them, and accidentally weaned myself off of them because I can't remember to take anything in the mornings for the life of me. fast forward a couple weeks and I have fallen deep into the anxiety trap again after moving across the country for a new job and was planning to go talk to a doctor about a different medication, which is why I'm here...

Has anyone had success taking an anxiety drug in the evenings before bed? if so, which one? what were the side affects right off the bat?

I just want some ideas to bring up to the doctor and see whathe they think is the best fit.

Dear acbee:

I took the anxiety medication Klonipin for about 17 years, throughout the day and 1 mg tablet at bedtime. throughout those years I had no trouble falling asleep and staying asleep every night, as I remember it. Unfortunately, my life circumstances during those years got worse (my dysfunction continued and got worse) and when I tried to get off Klonipin I wasn't successful, as the anxiety attacks weaning off and getting off were way more intense than I had before taking the drug.

Finally, I got off Klonipin (using psychotherapy skills I learned, as well as exercise, yoga and such).

I don't sleep as easily and do not stay asleep throughout the night since, but will not go back on any psychiatric drug, I sure hope not, ever.

Short version: I am having a negative experience with bupropion for anxiety treatment.

Long version:
I had a bad episode of anxiety at the end of November. I wasn't coping well, so I went to my primary care doctor the beginning of December. He prescribed bupropion, 100 mg twice/day. It seemed to take the worst of the edge off at first, but anxiety was still bad and perhaps increasing, so I went up to 150 mg twice/daily. Again, it seemed to help and I thought I might be over the worst of it, but then the anxiety increased again, along with insomnia and very negative thinking. I tried a 200 mg tablet, but had weird body aches so I didn't take it again. When I called my doctor, he said that he didn't believe the medication was causing any of the problems. He advised me to take the 150s thrice/day. I ignored that advice. The insomnia was driving me mad. I was crying frequently and had very negative thoughts about myself, a self-loathing. I switched doctors and asked for insomnia treatment. The new doctor prescribed Ambien temporarily, which has been a great relief for the hours that it works at night. It at least allowed me the perspective to see that the bupropion was likely causing the anxiety and insomnia. I dropped down to the 100 mg tablets I still had, have less anxiety than the 150s and can at least sleep 6 hrs with the ambien. I will discuss tapering off bupropion with the new doctor on Friday. The best I could say about the drug is that it hasn't helped me. The worst I could say is that it greatly exacerbated the problem.
