Dealing with extreme irritability and agitation

Postby kmcfan » Sun Jan 24, 2016 3:23 am

Hi,

I have been diagnosed with GAD, panic disorder and OCD. I take 30mg Lexapro, 50mg of Trazodone, and 5mg of Valium (as needed). I feel like this combination is helping me a great deal, but I'm experiencing new symptoms of extreme irritability and agitation at the slightest provocation. This is affecting my relationships and work. I feel like I can either go into a flying rage or cry uncontrollably at any annoyance. I don't feel this way all the time, but often enough that it is troubling. I've taken to keeping Valium in my desk at work to take the edge of these feelings. I know they are anxiety related, like I still feel mild anxiety, maybe get poor sleep, and then feel this way.

My biggest problem--and this always happens--is that I plan to tell my psychiatrist about it, but somehow end up feeling really well the day of my appointments and it never comes up, OR I am irritable and agitated and just want the appointment over as soon as possible so I can go home.
I'm not asking advice about this in particular, though. I think I will have to force myself to write down all the things I plan to discuss with the doctor at each appointment, that is easy to resolve.

What I'm really wondering about, of course, is the symptoms. I know my doctor is the best resource, but does anyone have experience with irritability and agitation? Have you ever had something prescribed for it? Am I missing a diagnosis?

Note: I would not want to add anything to my current regimen, I would replace something. I've been on Lexapro for about 8 months since switching over from Paxil which I took for nearly a decade.

I don't know why you're experiencing it but you're not alone. I get extremely irritable and agitation on a daily basis. Maybe it's being on meds? I'm currently taking Viibryd and Klonopin for GAD. Was recently on Lexapro and Ativan and was irritable then too. Meds help but side effects of course there is always SOMETHING. The irritability is bad but not sure it is the meds or the anxiety itself. I feel irritable or am "triggered" when people are talking or laughing at work, certain music like fast paced that makes me anxious, certain sounds like people eating or the sound of their voice, commercials on TV and the sounds they make, the list goes on. I don't feel like myself. The old me wouldn't care or notice as much. I don't know why we feel this way but I'm pretty sure it's part of the anxiety. Hang in there. I know it sucks.
