GAD seems too easy of a diagnosis

Postby Jman » Fri Nov 06, 2015 11:04 pm

Since about February I have been experiencing a variety of symtoms that my primary car doc has concluded are the result of GAD. Symptoms have included very cold fingers sometimes with tingling; some palpitations, muscular discomfort in my upper back, shoulders, neck and even on both sides of upper chest. Sometimes I feel light headed and a bit nauseous. I know these are all symptoms of GAD, but I am not conscious of any issues that I "worry" about. After one failed attempt my doc eventually prescribed Wellbutrin. Perhaps coincidentally my symptoms began to lessen after about two months, but only for a couple months. They are back in full force again. My doc stills insists that it is GAD and suggests that I get counseling. I do have cardiac issues (CAD) and many of theses symptoms are associated with impending heart attack. I exercise vigorously 3-4 times a week without discomfort and I passed my last stress test a couple of months ago with flying colors. But With these symptoms I confess that I now do worry that it all could be heart related. My question is this: does anyone have these typical GAD symptoms but doesn't believe they have any issues about which they are constantly worried? Can you have GAD without any obvious issues causing anxiety? Very frustrated here. Next stop is probably my cardiologist, but nobody seems to have an answer. Thanks.

First of all, I think it's not a bad idea to see your cardiologist (particularly since you mentioned you already have heart problems)--if your cardiologist says your healthy it might be safe to assume it's anxiety.

My mom and I both have GAD, and her mom doesn't understand it and always asks "Well, what are you worried about, honey?" to which my mom replies "Nothing--that's why they call it a DISORDER." I'm gonna parrot that back to you in response to your question ("does anyone have these typical GAD symptoms but doesn't believe they have any issues about which they are constantly worried? Can you have GAD without any obvious issues causing anxiety?")--you can certainly have GAD without actually feeling anxious about anything. Sometimes my anxiety stems from something I'm stressed about, but most of the times, it's me waking up, noticing I feel sick and jittery without explanation, and realizing "Oh, it's gonna be one of THOSE days." GAD really doesn't have much rhyme or reason to it; it's usually just chemicals in your brain messin' up.

I'm always amazed at how much of a physical response anxiety has on my body, and those definitely could all be signs of GAD (as you mentioned). I think your best plan would be checking in with your cardiologist and making sure you're still doing well, and if you are, you know that these are normal (albeit very unpleasant) signs of anxiety. Best of luck!
