Hypomania, Medicine and Diagnosis.

Postby creative_nothing » Fri Jun 19, 2015 3:12 pm

Does any of you think you might have been misdiagnosed?

I am not telling something, like doctor diagnosed with GAD, but I think I have AvPD or pure obsessional OCD, because all of these are anxiety disorders.

What I am concerned here is about cyclothimia.

SSRIs that are used to treat GAD, can induce mania, so this kind of misdiagnosis would be truly a issue.

For me SSRIs have really stabilized my mood and made me more confident, but I still think my mind is running on extremelly high pace.

I really dont know anymore if this is really anxiety or hypomania/dysthimia.

Hey cn,

It's quite possible you have AVPD or even SAD. There are things you talk about when you're out in public that I can totally relate to. One time you said when you hear people laughing you wonder if they're laughing at you. I asked my therapist about this and she said it is normal if people have done so a lot in the past.

The racing thoughts with SSRI's are totally normal. They are known to improve mood but can make anxiety symptoms worse. It's a catch 22 :( What docs do around here is add a mood stabilizer like gabapentin on top of the antidepressant.

Honestly the only thing that truly kills my anxiety are antipsychotics, however I don't like taking them too much as they can cause TD. But a low dose annihilates my anxiety if i take it as a PRN.

Cyclothemia is interesting because my psychiatrist told me that I have a possible case of BP 2 and she is monitoring me for it. A lot of people think that hypomania is simply mood elation and that's not true. Significant irritability, racing thoughts, agitation can be hypomania too. I had agitated depression and mixed episodes in the past and it is NOT FUN!

Racing thoughts can be anxiety but if youre having other symptoms such as agitation or irritability you should get screened for any of the three bipolar disorders.

Best of luck

It could be AvPD, however I think StPD explain more symptons.

I may be wrong but I guess AvPD self esteem is stably low, while StPD(and even more BPD) tend to fluctuate between high and low.

Also I do think that speech and thought symptons of hypomania and schizotypy tend to overlap more.

I have no diagnosed mood disorder, but SSRI really stabilized my mood, however it was prescribed by GAD.

I was thinkin more about anxyolithic, but now thatyou mentioned what were the side effects of anti psychotics? Cant we take very small doses?
