Help me understand

Postby scaredmum » Tue Oct 11, 2011 3:21 am

Hi I have a 17 year old son that has told us he has GID.
I am totally confused re this as I have seen no femine behaviour (cross dressing) etc ever from him. Is this not always case?
He is receiving consoulling and that is great but he talks about doing the operation and this is what worries me.
Is there a time limit before being able to do this. We are in Australia. I think 17 is such an early age for such a decision. He has only ever had 1 sexual experience with another boy. Please dont get me wrong I love him respect him and will totally support him in any decision as will his Dad and close family. I just think he should go slow. Would appreciate any advise etc as I want to understand how to help my son with this.

Hi, scaredmum! Well, you could tell your son what you said here, that you respect and love him but want him to go slow so that he'll be sure that he's making the right decision.
I'm not sure you can find out about what the law says in Australia here, but he might have to have therapy for a while before doing the change.
Try to communicate with him and be his friend, it's probably the best thing you can do.
I hope you enjoy this forum!

I agree with jasmin, in most countries (not sure about Australia) you do have to have extensive therapy and live as the other sex before you can have gender reassignment surgery.

Also, if he has not shown feminine traits, maybe he is afraid?
