I can really find myself in this post above.
Even before I started Gambling i was bit of different person, was struggling to find joy there where others would.
I realized that when I am living life which is fulfilling me then I dont have need of this rush given by gambling but unfortunetly my life, career and social life is mostly sorted in that way that i need more rush.
Probably my diagnose would be addiction prone person with mild deppressed view towards life.
Now during this Corona #######4 i just rcv another confirmation of this theory.
People are so scared of this $#%^, world has stopped, my gambling also ceased (sport betting) but do I really feel better because i dont gamble.
Honestly I dont....yeah I have more money, but life is just dull more then ever before, sititing alone at home drinking by myself.
Dont get me wrong Gambling is in a way really $#%^ disgusting addiction but in some other way is best fun ever so for all those who suffer from regrets, are in debts or whatever dont be so harsh on you...it is life....usually $#%^ anyway with few bright points.

Tunefor - a lot of what you've written resonates with me also (as well as this post in general).
I'm pretty sure the reason gambling became so bad for me, was because I had other problems in life, besides the gambling. It probably can happen also to perfectly happy contented people, but I'd say that is more rare in gambling addiction. Totally happy content people don't need gambling to make them feel better.
However, as time has gone on I've also managed to (slowly) balance the ways I make myself feel better - not always through gambling basically. It's not easy, but it's worth the effort. Like you say though, life in general is not easy, so no-one can expect it always to be so, gambling or not.
