I can't seem to quit

Postby Injamea » Wed Apr 17, 2019 1:56 am

Here's a little about me. I'm 29 years old, and work a 2-2-3 schedule so I find myself with a lot of time off. I also have been diagnosed with depression and am on medication. I started gambling when I was 18. It seems like no matter what I do, I cant seem to shake the addiction. I've tried going to meetings, getting help from family, talking to my doctor about my mental health and even trying to find hobbies to fill the time. I'm not much of a social person and have a hard time talking with people. Needless to say I cant find hobbies that get me put of my shell. I am hoping that some may shed some light and help me through this difficult time.

Some states provide free treatment to gambling addicts or free counseling. You might want to call a counselor who specializes in Gambling Addiction and see if you can go for some counseling sessions to help you determine why you cannot "shake this addiction".

Also follow the suggestions on the strategies post.

Cutting up credit cards, limiting your access to cash, buying gift cards that cannot be redeemed for cash, paying your bills the second you get them or handing over your finances to a trusted friend or relative, telling others that you are a gambling addict (we are only as sick as our secrets approach), continuing to attend meetings and get a sponsor might help. With this addiction, even though you are not much of a social person, being an "island" is not going to help you overcome this addiction. Try reaching out to a trusted, mature, understanding someone who cares about you.

Best wishes

Im am sorry to hear that you are going through a tough time Injam.

From what you have described, it seems like you have tried quite a few things. How about self-exclusion? I hate to also say, but sometimes people try a whole bunch of things, but they don't really put their heart into it. Sometimes, it just may not be the right time to quit because the positive feeling of gambling is still outweighing the negatives..

From that list you gave, I like the getting help from family (hopefully not monetary!) since that helped me most.
