Online Gambling Disaster!

Postby walkaway » Mon Jun 08, 2015 3:19 pm

I have a problem with binge gambling, i have been in debt around 3 times through gambling and it has to end now.
I am around £15000 in a debt, living with my parents in my 20's.
It will take me around 2 years to clear this again and I will have to live off around £25 a week for 12 months.
I can stop for months on end and then all off a sudden I start slowly gambling again and the cycle continues.
I need to stop this, as I want to buy my own place etc.
Gambling makes me depressed, dizzy and ashamed.

I have now self excluded my accounts and blocked my laptop and I am hoping to start some online counselling.

Anybody have any tips, on how to help with this?

Be a bookmaker or casino owner. It is the only way you will ever win in the long run my friend. How much have you won at most? How much have you lost? How many times have you put your winnings back in? Do you believe in luck? Chances are you will lose more the longer you play. There are no systems, there is a really good piece on that by a mathematician, i'll try and find it if you are interested.

The only way to beat an addiction is to refrain from the activity. Easy to say I know, and pretty obvious, but Don't Gamble. That is the only way to beat the addiction.

Okay, with addictions you can say how do I stop? That you have to find yourself, what works for you. I've never had a gambling problem myself I will add, but been through it with someone else. I will admit I have had a little flutter here and there but I set myself a sum I can afford to lose and don't go above that. I keep winnings and stake separate and I can enjoy going to the races for the day knowing I am probably going to lose a hundred quid (I've been twice in the past 3 years). If you can't only bet small stakes and what you can really afford to, then you have to walk away for the sake of your own bank account and your friends then get in touch with gamblers anonymous. It's hard with all the advertising and such I know, but you can move on and fill your life with better things.

Use the debt as a constant reminder and motivator to never again let yourself get in this situation. Get out of the gambling world - it will just keep sucking you in. Get out and associate with new people, find new hobbies and set yourself some goals. You say it will take 2 years? Aim higher - there is no reason you can't clear it in 12 months. Work your butt off, get another job, get 2 jobs - do whatever it takes to prove to yourself that your better than this and can do anything you put your mind to.

Once you regain your confidence and prove to yourself you can achieve the goals you set yourself, your mind will switch and you'l realize you won't need to gamble anymore - you won't even want to.

Thanks , I will make sure I never do this again. Last bet was a week ago now, I have a long way to go, but hopefully it will ease with time.

I know you can never win in the long run and I think hitting rock bottom this time, was the kick up arse I needed! I used to enjoy it, now I am totally fed up with it!

I did have a few fairly big wins and yes it just went back to the bookmakers slowly.

I know you can never win and the long run. I did have several decent wins and yes it did slowly go straight back to the bookmaker  . I used enjoy it, but now I am totally sick of it!

I'm convinced that there is no "rock bottom" other than the dirt nap. You may think you've hit it but I'm 100% certain that things can and will get much, much worse if you keep gambling. You already realize that you're going to have to stop someday, now you just have to decide if now is the time or if you're going to have to dig that hole a little deeper.

I know you can do it if you're serious about never, ever gambling again. It won't be easy in the beginning but it will get easier in time. You will have to keep your guard up for the rest of your days though.

Try to find a GA room and listen to some stories of success and be inspired, it really helps.

Rock bottom is just something people say, what I really mean is that this time, it was the worst I have ever felt about it.

I had to go in the bookmakers earlier, I had a slip from weeks ago, with £10 to collect. I was in and straight back out with the money. Will not be in again now!

I agree - I have lost count of the times I was sure I had hit "rock bottom" . I remember asking myself what it was going to take before I finally stopped . I had no answer .

Great job on walking away . Acknowledge and congratulate yourself for making a good decision .
