luckycrystal83 -

Just some thoughts:

First, sorry, I have no advise. We are not physicians here.

He is very fortunate that you care about him. You are doing the right thing by providing him with medical care. Hopefully someone can chime in who has been through a similar experience with a child.

On the flip side you need to take care of you too. Have you been able to speak to a therapist about how this affecting you? Despite his condition you have a right to feel good too, and you can't be of any help to him if you lose track of your own mental health while going through this.

Poor kid! Hallucinations are very scary! He must be terrified. A clinical psychologist who works with children or a marriage and family counselor could help him a great deal right now. He needs a thorough diagnostic workup, both medical and psychological, and supportive therapy that includes lots of psychoeducation. Psychoeducation is instruction in the facts and concepts and vocabulary of human psychology and biology, intended for clients receiving mental health care. Your son needs age-appropriate basic information about how the mind works, so that he can better understand what he is experiencing and be able to normalize it, talk about it, know that he is not alone, and get the most effective help.

I know about living with hallucinations because I have them too. I hear voices, I see things, and I have a wide variety of other unusual sensory experiences. And at the same time I live a full life as a responsible adult. I used to be terrified, to think my life was over, until I got professional help. Now I am thriving. I take my car to a very competent mechanic; finding him took work but I am so glad I invested the time and effort. My whole family benefits from his services. And I take myself to a psychotherapist; ditto!

All is not lost. Your son needs professional help, not because he is sick or broken but so that he can reach his full potential. Many children who struggle grow up to be magnificent adults.

You need care and support too! How is your support network?

In this case, psychiatric services and meds may help, though I am not a doctor and I cannot give advice.

But as a Christian, I wonder if, along with the psychotherapy, an exorcism might help. The reported symptoms do have similarity to cases of reported demonic harassment.

Exorcisms are not all done by the Roman Catholic church, although the RC church does exhaustively explore the possibility of mental illness first.

In the Protestant world, exorcisms are called "deliverance ministry."

Face it - there are likely to be fraudulent deliverance ministers out there, so some solid research needs to be done first if the Protestant deliverance ministry is to be tried. Personally, I would trust a pastor in a small town in West Virginia to help locate a genuine deliverance minister. His email is:

Otherwise, I'd recommend asking local clergy - people you can meet, and whose repuations can be locally verified. Considerable care is needed in this.

Some clergy will deny exorcism or deliverance are valid. That's a choice the caregivers will have to make for themselves.

This is only a suggestion - and I'm not recommending it as a substitute for psychotherapy.
