TRIGGER WARNING

Forum for significant others, family and friends of people with mental illness to discuss relevant issues they face.
Forum rules
This is a support forum for the family, partners and friends of those with mental health issues. This forum is intended to be a safe place to discuss information, give and receive support and learn about all the issues related to being involved with a person with a disorder. Whilst it can be healthy to express various emotions, please remember to be respectful about the disorder itself. This is a place for constructive discussions, not a venting forum.

The issues experienced by the significant others of those with disorders cannot always be discussed in the other parts of the site in a way that does not trigger those with disorders. Moderators may therefore move threads from other forums into this one at their discretion.

TRIGGER WARNING

This forum may be triggering to some.

The moderators work hard to ensure that the respective disorders are not treated with prejudice or disrespect.

However, we also recongnise that those who are involved with people with disorders of any kind all have their own unique issues to deal with. As stated in the pink notice above the forum, this place should provide a safe haven in which they can freely express their feelings. They deserve to have them validated.

This forum is not intended to promote any division or sense of "them versus us". Therefore, if you are triggered by any of the issues raised in this forum, you should refrain from reading or posting here.

Can I also draw people's attention to the pink notice above the forum?

Whilst offering support to other members, please be aware that whilst your situations may be very similar, no two situations can ever be identical. There can be a very fine line between offering support and venting.

Please bear in mind that no two people with a disorder of any kind will present in identical ways. When making replies, can you please try to avoid using phrases such as "They", which implies that all people with a disorder persistently act in identical ways. The use of such phrases can cause a thread to become a platform for venting, and detract from the real issues. It can also imply that people with disorders are not individuals and are instead a stereo type or a label, and this is disrespectful to the disorder. Instead of using the word "they", perhaps you could instead say something like "In my experience, I noticed that my ex/partner/family member would........."

Each situation is different, and other people's perspectives can be helpful if they are given in a supportive way, whilst respecting that no two sets of dynamics can ever be the same, even within the context of a disorder.

Thanks for reading.
