I may be misunderstanding your question, Dwight, but I'd try to picture a dollar bill, with a huge bag of rupiah next to it, to remember that one dollar is LOTS of rupiah. So when I convert to rupiah, I always have a bigger number, and when I convert the other way, I always have a smaller number.
Then a "trick" might be to
add 4 zeros to a number in dollars to get the approximate rupiah value: So, $50 = about 50
0000 Rp. [500,000Rp]
$623.99 = about 623
9900Rp. [6,23
9,900Rp.]
And to go the other way,
take away 4 zeros [or numbers] so 7
5,000Rp = about $7. I wouldn't worry about rounding any of the numbers, since this is approximate anyway.
123,45
6,789Rp = about $12345. [$12,345.]
56,75
0,000Rp = about $5675. [$5,675.]
These are all very approximate, but will be enough for daily use, and I'd go straight to
http://xe.com if I needed a more accurate result. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this very well? I hope it makes some sense?
