What is your dyscalculia like?

Postby Leslieslsa » Mon Jun 11, 2012 6:30 am

I have been diagnosed with the math form of dyslexia. It is so bad that I am 24 and cannot pass algebra one. HIGH SCHOOL algebra one. No matter HOW LONG I try, or how much tutoring I get, I ALWAYS fail math. Except for Geometry. For some reason, I was pretty good with that. I am assuming it's the pictures involved. It makes me feel hopeless. It was the only subject that ever really gave me trouble, but I CANNOT pass it. I tend to forget the different types of algebraic rules. No matter how much tutoring I get, every problem looks the same, and I cannot figure out how to solve them if they all look the same to me. Has anyone else here had experience with this disorder? I didn't know where else to ask about it.

Hi,
I had the same experiences, with algebra and geometry.

Have you tried replacing the letters with playdough,(my hubby was my math tutor in college and it kinda helped  ). Or pictures? Or using different colors for different parts of the algebraic equations? Also, if you are dx. dyscalcic, and your school accommodates disabilites, that extra time helped me, just the test/time stress would mess me up, so could help you too. :D

I imagine the first step is to see your learning style, then apply that to algebra to make for better absorption.
