Hi....
- I am a junior doctor who is know doing housemanship
- Ive been working as doctor for one years

- Recently, my neuropschiatric specialist have diagnosed me having multiple minor dyslexia
- the reason for my post are the following:-
1/ To understand what is multiple minor dyslexia as i have difficult to find source of information. Ive been looking in the web, all topic that i come accross is only dyslexia, nothing about minor dyslexia
2/ To know the accuracy of my diagnosis
3/ To know whether i am fit to continue my carreer as doctor
4/ To know what are adapation issue that i need to focus on to have daily normal life and also survive with my career

Here is my story, which might suggestive im having minor dyslexia:-

- I have a delayed speech . Start to talk at age 5 - 6 years old. My mother told me, before i can able to talk ...i keep saying nana
- have early problem of pronouncation....like fish , patient (-tient) n only able to speak some word properly on my teenager
- when i communication with friend n others.....i frequently need to ask my friend to repeat what they were saying
- some slang, like esp indian slang...or some new words its hard for me to catch up
- always have problem to hear what people say in noisy enviroment
- do always have spoonerism... like in my local language kepala (head) vs kelapa (coconut)
- always clumsy n do mistake....for example write : want to write symphysisfundal heigh 37 cm instead i write 37 celcius...and want to write Right foot abscess instead i write Left foot abscess
- unable to catch up the discussion in one large group , like bedside teaching...ward round..ive to stay directly face to face in order able to catch up
- i noticed that even in classroom...i actually unable to understand what being taught...unless my mind being prepared wats going on to be teach or i rely heavily on book to further my studies

- language acquization is moderate....for my local language malaysian langauge, english
- have short auditory memory...ex like my specialist has given an instruction and within a minute, it gone like wind
- relied heavily on subtitle on english movie or need to increase the volume

Here are some example of difficulty in my career
- have history of clumpsiness....for example was told right foot abscess, instead i write left foot abscess
- slow in completeing my ward work....i noticed that when everyone have completed their job, but not me...and often goes back late
- have easily loss track of instruction or forget intruction given...example: when my specialist give me 5 instruction and i am writing down those 5...as i write the second instruction, i forget the remaining 3 instruction
- may stuck blur for a while, when there are many ward work task going on
- have difficulty to listen new term or new spelling....
- when it comes to spelling, i often unable to catch up the spelling mentioned to me verbally...need to write at piece of paper or spell it very slowly
- always have intermittent wrong spelling...example today i am able to write beautiful, tomorrow i forget how to spell beautiful
- listen differently of what my specialist told me....for example my speacialist told me check, instead i herad chest
- have problem to focus
- have problem to follow the discussion of the round
- have been accused for not being concentrated or focus
- i also noted, that whats im being thinking in my head, instead i write differently from what i think

I have listed down all my symptom and also my concern. I need HELP how to adapt with my condition. Last but not least, since im a doctor, im also worried that ive been thinking too much about my self.... Thanks everyone who willing to help me. Hey there!
You're aware of the hurdles you face which helps, I like to double, triple, quadruple check if need be.
I know stress makes it worse for me as well as lack of sleep.
With word mix-ups, it can help to add association dimensions to more clearly define them. Like with left and right, it helps to not just see the word but feel it. Making it multisensory to define and differentiate it may help.
Another one that I slip up on is Marshmellow, and Mushroom; I like to picture a colored mushroom as opposed to white one in association to the word as it makes it more different from that other soft edible thing(marshmellow).

unless my mind being prepared wats going on to be teach or i rely heavily on book to further my studies
I do too. It's really hard to mentally "shift" gears. To pass through school, I studied everything one month in advanced, you may not have to, the trick is finding out what works for you and making the appropriate compensations.

It's extra work, but you can do it!
Host 1(M), Host 2(F), Host 3(Neither M/F), Doubt(F), Charlie(M), Li'l(F), and more.
Dx: LD, Dyslexia, DP, DR, etc...so many.

sounds like you know yourself well - I would sit down and work out what works and doesn't work

list what you do to compensate and what you still need to put in place to have you win

clearly you have had your own set of 'tools' to get the grades you need to do what you are doing

so perhaps take a step back and evaluate how you can stay where you are and what you need to do to either support you or make you win even more

I am sure you have put many years into this career and with the knowledge you know have about dyslexia, this could be a greater gift to you and humanity. You might be able to focus on getting into a field where this gift can be most used.

you can make other doctors aware of Dyslexia - I see this as a fabulous opportunity

It's still dyslexia - but it's not a severe form that's why it's stated as "minor" and you displayed multiple symptoms - but all of them are minor... basically - you can handle certain situations which someone with severe symptoms couldn't handle that good (or couldn't handle at all) without using "tricks"... but when you have dyslexia - you need to learn tricks that can help you adapt, don't try to deal with situations - in same way they're handled by those that don't have this condition (main mistake all of us do - trying to behave like the rest... even if we're not alike).

See if this helps: http://www.dyslexia.com/library/davismethods.htm

Tricks of the trade or as I like to say "Tools"

find the tools that will support you in your journey of dyslexia - remember it's a gift not a curse

so for my son his tools include:

ginger software which checks grammar and spelling - it's a tool designed for dyslexics - it has some faults but for the most part he likes it and I do too - and I know my non-dyslexic son uses it too

dragon software - we are starting with this tool at the moment to help him verbally transcribe his work on to the computer - he doesn't have to type any more he just dictates his words - this is nice for him because sometimes I find as a dyslexic person his thoughts are faster than his typing ability

Learning Ally - formerly recording for the blind and dyslexic (RFBD) for his books on audio format - another great organization and an organization that if you are on FB you can find other people to connect to - you can get books that have been read by a real person and have them on say your ipad.

tricks and tools and tips - are what are going to help you stay where you are and do what you love

good luck on your fanstastic journey and I look forward to hearing about the difference you make to other dyslexic people

Hello there! I am a mom of a dyslexic child, and when my son was diagnosed, the Psychologist told us that "he will be a slave to technology". Similar to what the other replies are telling you, there are many tips, techniques, and technologies that can aid you. I also want to tell you that I know a dyslexic doctor. She is a Dermatologist, and a Mohs surgeon! It can be done!

Do you have access to any dyslexia tutors? Many dyslexic adults benefit from Orton Gillingham based, multisensory tutoring programs.

Often, dyslexia is accompanied by special abilities in other areas...don't despair. See if you can use the technologies the other posts mentioned, along with trying to find a tutor. Do you have an International Dyslexia Association branch where you live? They may be able to help you find a qualified tutor.

Good luck!
J. Michael
