dealing with diagnoses and having hassle from DWP

Postby butterflies » Mon Sep 17, 2012 9:09 am

I have been diagnosed in the last couple of months , i am under a therapist and he is helping me a lot he is helping me to understand my alters and to try and deal with the effects of how i feel about everything .up to know we have discovered 8 alters .i have other health problems .and just got ESA wrag and last week i had a call from DWP saying i have to go to a work programme .it has really shaken me up i've been very dissociated over the last week due to this and the one alter that really scares me that i don't like has been getting out alot .she really angry and gets so mad at everyone and says some horrid stuff at my kids .i don't know if we can cope going to this work programme scared incase ,she comes out its fine when i am with my therapist as he knows how to control her ,its like he can see when we are switching . i'm no good at explaining myself to people face to face so this work programme thing is terrifying me . the jobcentre advisor had said it was all about helping me with my health but when i got the call all they kept talking about was getting me back into work . we tend to stay away from people as can't trust man people how do i deal with this any help would be great ?

Welcome to this DID Forum! So that we can understand what you are dealing with, please explain or at least spell out in full "ESA wrag" and "DWP".

ESA = Employment Support Allowance (welfare/unemployment benefit), DWP = Department for Work and Pensions (goverment department that administers said benefit).

butterflies, you're in the UK I'm guessing?! Well done for getting a diagnosis first of all. My understanding is that's not easy here (I haven't tried!) If I'm reading your post right, you're worried about this work programme in case this angry alter comes out and makes things difficult? Or you're worried they'll try to get you into work when you're not ready? Or both :) Do you have much communication with this alter? Could you come to some kind of agreement with her about when she can be out/what is appropriate behaviour? Could you offer her some alternatives to express herself (writing, drawing, smashing things, I don't know)? Her saying horrible things to your kids is not ideal, either :(

About the work thing, can your therapist write something explaining the situation, to back you up in case you need it? Or could you go to a benefits advice centre, maybe get some support or advocacy around this situation?

Anyway, welcome, and I hope things settle down for you :D

thank you Owleyes , i was diagnosed about 6 weeks ago as it was my new therapist that has diagnosed it has actually been on my records for 2 years but none of the mental health people said anything to me . i am just starting to learn about how to deal with my alters , i saw my therapist today after i wrote this thread and we spoke about my angry alter and i am going to try writing to see if that helps . My therapist is also getting a mental health advocate to get in touch with me to help with this work programme thing . From what we have gotten to a lot of my alters are littles with a coupl that are 19 and 24 and a couple that are 15 and 16 . its just so hard as i have been keeping myself away from the world as i become scared of what might happen .just going to get help from a therapist has been a great step so having to meet loads of other people and them expecting so much from me just seems so overwhelming .

thank you for you welcome and help .

I can totally understand that, believe me! I don't do well with new people and situations either, I much prefer to hide away at home. I'm glad your therapist is so supportive and getting you an advocate. If you don't mind me asking, how did you find your therapist? Are they NHS or private? I'm trying to find someone who works with dissociative disorders, but no luck in my area so far.

I hope communication with the angry alter goes well. Keep us posted :D
